June 2012 Weddings

Mehhhhhhh :( :(

Today we figured out that we are incredibly over budget :( To put it into perspective, we are paying more for our reception alone than we wanted to spend on the entire wedding...Its a little eye opening just how much taxes, fees, etc really add up... :(

Is anyone else finding that they are spending more than anticipated? Or is anyone finding they are spending less than they thought?!

Re: Mehhhhhhh :( :(

  • Definitely spending more than the budget, but I knew we would. My parents are paying for it up to a certain amount, and whatever goes over I have to pay for. I knew I would end up dishing some money out because I tend to (unfortuantely) have expensive taste.

  • Could you cut back on the bar? If you're doing plated could you switch to buffet? Things like that?

Same here! We've been engaged for a year and a half so I feel like that helped with time to research and everything so I wouldn't go over budget
  • We are doing buffet, which somehow was more expensive! Our theory was "We are only getting married once", and it has come to bite us in the butt. FI is not worried, which is good, because he is the money-maker in our family (I am still in school, and only work part-time) I just am a little overwhelmed.

We got engaged in October of 2010, and at that point I was very simple minded, and I wanted a very simple wedding. It has literally turned into a circus, and as much as I love all the plans we have made, I am getting sticker shock (even after buying a house...you'd think the price of a wedding would be like nothing after that...)

  • We are doing okay but it definitely gets overwhelming when you sit down and actually look at all the bills.

There are certain things that we went overbudget with (florist) but others that we saved on (photographer, my dress, etc) so we are kind of balancing everything out.

I hate spending that much money on one day though. It makes me sick sometimes. Gosh it could be a down payment on a house.................

  • We are over budget, but within ours bounds I guess you could say. I have freak out moments sometimes, but I can usually find even just a tiny bit to cut back on and that makes me feel better.

  • We are about 1,000 over our overall budget currently, and that's because of food/alcohol.  Not great, but not horrible.  Most of this is because we may have to invite more people than we originally intended.  The good thing is that we are under budget in every other area, such as DJ, decor, invites, photographer, etch.

Food and drink was one of the most important things to us, so we are trying to cut back in other areas to make up for the overage in that area.  So far, it hasn't been too bad.

  • My problem is that my budget is based on 75 guests attending and we currently have...112?! on the list. So we could end up really over budget on the reception, although I know there will be people who can't come. It just sucks because we won't know until about a month before the wedding where we stand. I'm under budget in every category that is not dependant on the guest count.

And I know what you mean about buffet being more expensive, I initially wanted to do buffet but it was $9 more pp than sit down. WTF!

  • Why don't you change to plated dinners since they're cheaper? I also think plated dinners are nicer
  • My parents gave us $8000, and we figured our budget would be about $10,000, but FI and I are saving up another $4000 to give us some wiggle room. We'll probably need it all, since our guest list is a little bigger than I would've liked. FI's parents are paying for our honeymoon. We are so thankful for their contributions!

Both of us are still in school, not making much money. We're trying to keep things pretty simple and cut out little "extras" that aren't necessary, but we did decide that photography, my dress, and our reception venue and food were things worth splurging on.

I'm under budget.  I monitor our budget like crazy and make sure we are not over at all.  We went over on our photographer but we cut stuff in other areas to make up for it.  I also did a ton of research on just about everything to get a good deal.  My guess is I also helped some of my friends plan their wedding more recently so I had a strong idea how much everything costs going into planning our budget.

Is there anything you can cut?  Can you go with lower quality alcohol types?  Can you change the food options?  Is there anywhere else you can cut back?

  • FI and I were just going over this today. We're trying to decide how much we can afford to spend on invites. I really *want* pretty invites done by a local person... but can we afford it? I don't know.
  • I will probably go over budget but by less than 2000. Which in my opinion isn't too bad. To be honest our original amount wasn't very realistic. I hope things go better.

  • We are way under budget (which shocks me, but I am so happy about that!)

  • FI is in charge of budget, which worries me because I continually obsess over staying "on budget."  However, he is the moneymaker in the family right now (as a grad student, my income is pretty much nil) so we really are just spending his money.  We are what I would consider over budget, but he keeps reassuring me that we are on target with what he wanted to spend.  I do know how we're doing financially, and we're okay, but I still feel "defeated" over going over my ideal budget, even though we're still well within the range we discussed and set together.

I think we are right on budget, at the moment.  Of course, I called in ALOT of favors to make that happen. I actually know my photographer, DJ and lady who is doing my flowers so that helped tremendously. Also, we cut alot of things we thought were unnecessary like programs, favors and bubbles/birdseed (since our wedding is outdoor and reception is indoor @ same location). We are currently trying to nail down the catering which may throw us a little over our $3000 budget-but the goal is to stay as close as possible.
  • I padded our food and alcohol budget in hopes of coming in under budget. Here's hoping it all works out.

We also wanted to do buffet, but when we found out that buffet or duet plating was more than a traditional sit down dinner we changed to the sit down. Luckily we did our homework when choosing wedding suppliers. We only have the money that my dad gave us so we can not afford to go over. So far after factoring in everything we will have close to $4,000 left of the money my dad gave us when we are done.

  • I think overall for the wedding we are under bodget.  In put a ton of time into researching vendors and am doing invitations, centerpeices and a lot of other things myself.  If you include the honeymoon, I might be over.  I wasn't really factoring in doing a big honeymoon, but now we are and I am thrilled for it!
