  We are have a small cake to cut and then cupcakes for the guests. We are using a cupcake tower and putting the cutting cake on top.
  
  Do what ever makes you happy ... It is your wedding after all ...

  We are doing the small cake for cutting and cupcakes for guests as well. It is cute and easy. Cupcakes are more casual than a cake so it also depends on the feel of your reception.

  We chose to do a cake because 1) I really really love cake and 2) the cost for cupcakes wouldn't have been much cheaper than a cake.
  
  Whatever you guys prefer is fine.  As long as the cake/cupcakes are tasty, that's all that matters.

  You could do a small cake with cupcakes as the top tiers. This one is larger, but you could do a smaller version

  In my area, cupcakes are WAY overdone, so I think a pretty wedding cake is kinda rare, so if that were what I was doing, I'd choose a cake. And good call with the sheet cake, that will help keep costs down. GL!

  We chose the traditional wedding cake because I love the look of it and how it can go along with your theme and it's kind of a centerpiece of the reception. I also think of cupcakes as a kid's birthday party. I don't know why, but they're just not as mature or formal as a traditional wedding cake. Although, if I were at a wedding that had cupcakes  I wouldn't complain because I love cake and cupcakes taste the same. Mmmmm cake :0)

  We are having cupcakes in 4 different flavors (100 cupcakes) and a small cake on top for us to cut. It was only about half as expensive as a traditional tiered wedding cake, and you don't have to pay for a cake cutting fee!

  We, too, are doing the small cake/cupcake combo. It just seems simpler than having to cut cake for everyone.

  My fiancee and I are going to have a small cake for us to cut and than we'll be having cupcakes for the guests.  I love the idea that you're going to be feeding your sweet tooth with a candy bar but perhaps the sheet cake, cupcakes, and candy may be a bit much.  Have you considered having the cupcakes set up at the guests table?  That leaves more room for you to have a candy buffet for your guests.
