Poll: Am I crazy, or could this be a good idea?

So my work is promoting this event:  http://www.promotionevents.com/TopPot5K/Info.htm

It's a Run/Walk around Green Lake, the Sunday before my wedding.

For $30 I would get a t-shirt and a doughnut after the race.  I want to do it, as long as I can find a friend to do it with me.

Facts about me:  I don't run... like ever, well maybe if I'm really drunk, then I think it's fun.  But I walk EVERYWHERE (no car, no drivers license, FI drives me around occasionally, but I prefer to walk if possible), and I'm pretty good at jogging.

My OOT MOH thinks it might be a little bit of a risk, like I'd hurt an ankle or something.

But there are 5 weekends between now and then that I could practice.  I would probably be one of the later people to cross the finish line, but I'm okay with that.  I think this could help me zone-out from wedding planning.

So what do you think?:

3.1 miles is totally do-able!  And if you need to take a walking break at any point, just listen to your body and slow down.  IMO you aren't at a higher risk of hurting yourself than you would be walking around - unless you are accident prone..... :)

It sounds like a great way to relax. and plus, you can always do what I did -- WALK IT! I walked my first 5K. I signed up for it like 11 weeks in advance, thinking that was plent of time to get in shape. and blew it off. So the day of, I just walked it. 57 minutes, wasn't even the slowest one in my age group.  ;)

I LOVEEEEE running 5k's! It is amazing! I ran my first 5k in December and have been wanting to do another ever since. They are so much fun! I doubt you will twist an ankle but just be careful. If it is crowded be sure to be aware of other runners. Some people can get pretty serious becuase they really run for their times! But I definitely recommend doing a run.

Have you heard of the C25K program? (Couch to 5k) you could check it out. It's a pretty good training program to help you get there in 9weeks....even though it seems like you are already pretty active. You could maybe start a few weeks in. Oh and I definitely wasn't the fastest runner there. But it was really just about finishing the race for me. It felt like such a great accomplishment.

It seems really unlikely that you'd hurt yourself. I've done dozens and dozens of races, and never seen anybody seriously injured (that didn't start the race with an injury, anyway).

In fact, there are so many runners in my family that we decided to organize our own "race" the MORNING of my wedding: we planned out a 5K and 10K course, printed maps, and even made t-shirts for everyone that participated (we called it the "Runaway Bride" 5K and 10K); it was followed by a bagel and doughnut breakfast. It was a fantastic way to start off the day, and one of my favorite memories.

Kinmir, beach running is so hard!! Don't let the soft sand fool you. I just found that running on the beach is so hard because your feet seep into the sand, and then you have to pull them out as you go. so much effort. hahaha

mgoss - I HATE running, but love 5Ks.  It will be a great stress reliever and you'll feel awesome when it's over.  I still have my first 5K t-shirt and I treasure it.

arwo - I may be still this idea as well.  LOVE IT!

Thanks y'all! And feel free to steal the idea, I'm all for it. Here are pictures of the shirts we designed--so you know if you see someone around town wearing it, they were at my wedding!

mgross - my friends and I debated doing this race until we say that it was $30 and only ONE DOLLAR per person actually goes the charity.

I never every ran before and started doing races last year and now I love it! There are so many great ones around Seattle. My favorite 5k is the "Furry Fun Run" put on in June by the Seattle Animal Shelter - and yes, the doggies get to run it too!
