Do you invite children to a Bridal Shower?

It's been a while since I had to go to one of these things!

The only thing I have to compare bridal showers to are baby showers, and in my family we typically invite children (although it's still single sex).

Should Bridal showers work the same?

We did all children under the age of 5, plus any female child over the age of 5.  Of the 10 or so kids we invited, only 3 came though.
  • I think it just depends on your circle. There were kids at one of my showers but not the other (different sides of the family).

  • There is no right or wrong answer.

I think it depends on several factors.
-Would inviting the kids raise the number of guests enough so that the hostess cringes when she sees the numbers?
-Will you be having a flower girl? I'd invite her, especially if you were planning on inviting her mother.
-Are kids usually invited to these things in your circle?
-Is it a kid-friendly place? For instance, I don't like kids running around my house, so if I were throwing the party at my house, I'd cross all the kids off the bride's list. I'd maybe make an exception for the flower girl. If she were having tons of kids in the wedding party, I'd have to find a new venue which might raise the cost, so other guests might get crossed off the list. Get what I'm saying? It really just depends on what you want and what your hostess(es) can handle.

  • I would say it depends on how many kids.  A few aren't bad, IMO, but you don't want the shower to be kidfest either.
  • Depends on your circle. Kids are not invited to showers in mine. My personal feeling is don't invite them- mom will appreciate the afternoon off.

  • I think it's a comfort level thing.  I invited someone who would have brought their child, but they decided to not bring him.  If people know you are comfortable around their child, it makes them feel comfortable with you.
  • You'd be justified in not inviting them on the grounds that a bridal shower would be incredibly boring for kids. But if your group includes them with baby showers, here are a few things I'd consider: Will all the children invited be appropriately behaved and appropriately supervised by their parents? Are the adult invitees likely to say anything about sex? How many children will be attending? Is it enough to make the bridal shower feel more like a kid's birthday party, with all the adults chasing after their kids?

You're right that you don't have to invite children, but your reasoning for not is a bit bizarre, especially the bolded. Most adults know how to act appropriately in different situations and I doubt people would be describing sexual encounters in detail if there were a bunch of little kids sitting nearby. Does sex normally come up at bridal showers in your circle? I've never been to one where people sat around discussing sex.
