Poll: Ring soldering

For those who are married: did you get your rings soldered together? I never even heard of it until the jeweler asked. She said that soldering your e-ring and wedding band together is better, results in less wear on the prongs. I don't really want to, but now I'm paranoid about the rings rubbing together. Now I'm curious how many people have done it.

I want to do it but my stepmom has tried to talk me out of it. She has quite a large diamond in her set, and her argument is that when she has the wedding band serviced (it is an invisible setting) she doesn't want to send the e-ring in as well. And vice versa.

But I still kind of want to do it. I have a feeling the rings spinning will drive me nuts.

I didn't, and I'm glad. My rings would have been awkward to solder at best, and would pick up a lot of dirt. Also, my fingers swell a lot in the heat, and I find it impossible to pull off both rings at once--I have to take them off one at a time.

If your rings are made out of the same metal, particularly if they're made out of platinum, having to worry about the prongs being worn is really not an issue. If they're made out of gold, you might have to worry about the prongs wearing in, oh 20-30 years. Less if the stone was poorly set.

If your ring spinning bothers you then you can have that easily corrected without having the rings soldered together. Any competent jeweler can add two small balls of the same metal at the 4 and 8 o'clock positions, approximately, inside the ring. These little balls function to stabilize the ring not only when it's top heavy and tends to spin but also if you have trouble with your hands swelling at different times of year. You don't have to worry about losing it, say, in the middle of January when your hands are usually at their smallest.

I'm not going to. I want to be able to wear my wedding ring without the e-ring sometimes, like when I don't want a big fancy diamond on vacation and such (ok, it isn't THAT big and fancy but you know what I mean

But, neither of my rings have prongs, really and both have a rim of platinum around the small diamonds (pave set). I did get an eternity band so I wouldn't have to worry about it spinning.

I have to. I have 3 bands in total and the two wedding bands are the exact shape of the e-ring. When they are all on together and move around it looks funny.

My wedding band is curved to fit the engagement ring. I would never wear the wedding band alone. It made sense to have the two fused together (which I will have done after the wedding). I think it just depends on what your rings look like, can they be worn alone, etc.

There's no way I'd do it. Just try putting on and taking your rings off together. Total nightmare for me because my knuckles are a little bigger than the rest of my finger.

I was thinking about doing this, but I was concerned about the swelling of my fingers, and that sometimes, I just may want to not wear a huge diamond...FMIL also advised me against it.

I had two small balls added to the inside/back of both bands (they are not soldered together). This has greatly reduced the spinning (which was annoying). My fingers are fairly small (my rings are 5 1/2's), but they couldn't be made any smaller and still get over my knuckle (especially in the morning or after working out). Additionally, the thickness of the two bands when soldered would make them even tougher to get over my knuckle.
