How many programs to order?

I'm having about 250 guests at my wedding, and I'm trying to decide how many programs to order. I know some people don't think programs are necessary, but I really want them. I'm going to order ~150 invites, so I was thinking about the same number of programs, so there'd be about 1 per family or couple. Would that be enough? I don't want to run out, but I also don't want a ton of extras.

Re: How many programs to order?

  • I made one for every single guest, and I haven't counted the leftovers but it sure looks like only maybe 20 or so were taken. That made me sad. Even so, if I had it to do over I wouldn't want to estimate too low.

One per couple/family is probably okay, but if you really want to be careful, I'd do almost one per adult guest just in case your circle is better at taking them than mine was. :)
  • I think a lot depends on if your ceremony is in a church. I'm speaking in generalizations, of course, but I've always found there's more to follow along with in a church/religious ceremony. Thus, I want to make sure to have a program so I know when to sit/stand, etc.

Another factor is if you will have ushers handing the programs out. If the programs are just in a basket, I would say one per couple. If you have ushers distributing the programs, then just make one per adult guest.
  • Oh wow, I'm glad I asked this. We will have our ceremony in a church, and will have 2 little boys handing out programs, with our ushers being separate...maybe since the boys are adorable, I should print more. People will want to take programs from them! haha. Thanks for your input :)

  • I used to work in a stationery shop for a few years doing programs, invitations, etc. All things wedding paper related :)

Our suggestion was 1 per couple, 1 per single guest, 1 per each wedding party member (if they are the type to hang on to that sort of thing) and then about a dozen extras. For the most part, this worked out really well for people.
  • what a fun job...I'm a bit jealous. I'll do it that way. Thanks!!

  • I agree with PP.  If you're leaving them on a table for people to take, you won't need as many.  If you have someone handing them to each guest,  I'd do at least 200.  Some people will skip the church service and just go to the reception.
