Marriage License/Changing Residency/Which state?

I have no idea where to post this question.

I am a NY state resident but have lived in Boston for years now - I'll flame myself for that. By the time it occured to me that I should, we were engaged and I didn't want to have to repay to change my license/etc with my new last name so I've just waited.

My FI was a NY state resident until last summer when he claimed MA state residency. We're getting married in NY but living in MA.

Will it be a problem if we get a marriage license from NY state and then I come to home to change my name/residency/everything in MA?

I apologize if this is a stupid question - I have done no research on the subject yet and thought I'd start by asking on the boards. Thanks in advance!

I'm pretty sure you get the license in the state in which you are getting married.

You have to get a marriage license from the state/county in which you are getting married. You will get a copy of the marriage license, which you take to the DMV to get a new driver's license in the state in which you are licensed to drive (MA)

Nope. You generally have to get the marriage license in the county you get married in, though, so make sure you read up on the requirements before you go apply for one. (We got ours on May 6, for example, and it wasn't valid until May 8, so if we'd gone the day before the wedding, on May 7, we would have been SOL.)

We got married in a different state and I had no trouble changing my license.

You're wanting to do two steps (change your name and change your state of residency) in one so that you pay once, right? I think it will be fine, but your best bet is to call the driver's license bureau in MA and find out.

I'm actually in the same boat, sort of - currently live and just got married in Kentucky, but am moving to Boston this weekend. I changed my Kentucky license to my new name, though, and then will convert to a Mass license once we get there. I didn't want to risk it, and with Kentucky 1000 miles away, it would have been impossible to come back for stuff.

I have a California marriage certificate and used it to change my name with my university in Illinois without issue. I changed my name back in Cali before we moved because I was worried about doing the name and address change at once, but I honestly don't think it will be a problem - my best friend got married in NC and lives in NY and was able to change her name with her NC certificate.

In NY, the county you get the license in doesn't matter. It's good anywhere in NY state.
