Matching Dresses and Shoes?

My bridesmaids do not have a lot of money, many of them are still in school, so I am trying to make their attire as easy as possible for them.

Ive chosen a knee length charcoal gray dress, and told them they can pick out their own shoes, I said black because dyeing shoes to match the dress would add another thing to them to pay for.

My mom found out last night and disagrees with my choice, stating that, At a formal wedding the shoes need to match the dress!  I cant back out now, and tell my bridesmaids to purchase new shoes, AND dye them,

what do you think? will the shoes be ok?

Re: Matching Dresses and Shoes?

  • If you are requiring them to have dyed shoes, then you should be the one to purchase them. Black shoes will look fine with charcoal dresses.

Please let your girls pick their own black shoes - to potentially save money (and wear again) and so they get shoes that are comfortable for them!

  • I voted yes that black shoes will be fine. I have been in a lot of weddings and I don't remember one that I actually had to have shoes dyed for. I highly doubt anyone at your wedding would even think twice about what shoes your bridesmaids are wearing. They will be looking at you!
  • I had to dye a pair for a wedding I was in and on the return trip (luckily) they got slightly wet and were ruined. Dying shoes is risky, use black shoes.

Unless your mom is going to be the one paying for the matching shoes; let the girls wear black that that may already have and will be comfy in.
  • A formal wedding wouldn't have shorter dresses where you can see the shoes anyway... so yours isn't like, "black tie" formal, and even if it was the shoes absolutely do not need to match the dress. But, I just threw that out there cuz you could also point out to your mom that it's not super formal, to maybe make her feel better about it.

FWIW, I'm having a pretty formal wedding (groom in tails, guys in long tux jackets, floor length gowns) and none of my BMs shoes are going to be matching each others, much less their dresses. I told them they could wear whatever shoes they want, and didn't even specify a color.

Does your mother own a pair of shoes dyed to match all of her formal outfits?

  • I voted black shoes would be fine with the charcoal gray dresses!  My BM's are wearing the DB Sangria color and silver shoes (from Payless).
  • It better be OK because my BMs are wearing black shoes with their grey dresses!

This!  Tell your Mom that you already gave them the instructions and you are trying to be considerate of your friends' needs & monetary constraints.

  • Everyone told me that, too.  I'm not listening to people.  I see photos where it looks fine.
