wedding planner

Have any of you brides to be hired a wedding planner? I am on a tight budget, but I am wondering if hiring a wedding planner could actually save me money in the end...since they would know cheaper venues and short cuts to save money? If so, who would you recommend and what kind of $$?? Thank you so much!

I did not hire one because I am on a tight budget and we are having a very small wedding with very few vendors. By the time I discovered I knew a wedding planner I had already booked most of my vendors. You can save money by using a wedding planner because they get better deals from vendors than you can. The girl that I know is Emily from http://yhdweddings.com/index.html she is super sweet and very well respected in the community. Your initial consult is free. :-)

We also did not go with a wedding planner. I did all of the leg work myself to find the best value vendors.  If you don't have time to research and do projects, then I would probably recommend it.  Otherwise, use your fellow Knotties to find the best vendors for you.  Many of us are really budget conscious with the economy, and just plain not wanting to spend a down payment on a house for a wedding.  Good luck!

I agree with the previous posts. I also did not hire a wedding planner. Dont get me wrong, during the process, there have been many times when I wished we would have! But, at the end of the day, I find it ver satisfying that I have planned my wedding on a budget by myself. My wedding is a year a way, however, I have already found a venue, DJ and am now working on photography. Like previously noted, many of us have vendor information that we can share. Plus, there are many great ladies that are already married ready to share experiences. In the end, you have to do what is best for you. If you feel like your money would be best spent hiring one, then you need to do that. However, if you feel like you can take on the challenge, we are all here to support you!

I just hired a DOC because I need someone there to oversee all the details day of as I will be too focused on myself, groom and family/friends to worry about vendor setup and other details like that. Because this person was SO important to me and I got such great deals on everything else so far, I spent a bit more on her than I had originally intended ($2000) but there are much cheaper ones that are very talented available in the Valley for around $700.I actually REALLY enjoy event planing so I opted for just DOC and my wedding has been a dream to plan. It has been TONS of work - but if you invest the time you will find good deals and not be pressured to use a planners "preferred vendors" who, although are giving a discount to the planner, may not be the best price or the best quality in town.Hope this helps!

I agree with SMS. I thought wedding planning was super fun, and I enjoyed doing it myself. However, it is just not possible to do everything yourself the day of the wedding. I had two DOC (they were sisters and liked working together) and I wouldn't change that for anything!

I live out of town and so a planner was a definite necessity.  However, i think she was TOTALLY worth it, even if I'd been in town.  My planner charged 15% on top of whatever she arranged - catering, bar, rentals, cake.  She also did our flowers herself and we paid her for that and she didn't get the 15% extra.  I think it was worth it in savings and sanity.  Sanity because i would have been a mess without her.  Savings because time is money and she saved us so much time.  She also knew where to look, how to negotiate, and knew what we needed and didn't need.  Everything went PERFECTLY on the day of, and i did not worry about one darn thing.  Our planner was Carlyn Millea of Risa Whitney events (her website is terrible, but has her contact info).  I'd highly recommend her.  Not sure what she charges for day-of only.Good luck!

I am enjoying the process of selecting vendors and doing a lot of the leg work.  I hired my DOC (Christy at Yourperfectday.biz)  She is a very good deal which is important because my budget is tight!  We're paying $600 for the Day of and day before.  I know I'm organized but i didn't want to ask my family and friends to set up and tear down all of my stuff.  My friend raved about Christy, she did full wedding planning for around $1600 which I think is a steal.  I've been very happy so far, I'll let you know how the wedding goes :)
