Wedding Ceremony & Reception Music Discussions

Do I really need a DJ?

Our wedding ceremony/reception is taking place on the grounds of a private estate. This facility comes complete with an outdoor sound system. Whatever DJ I choose would have to be done by 10, but music played in the in-house sound system can last forever. Which is great, because this place has no curfew since it's a private residence. So..can't I just make a playlist to go in the in-house sound sytem all night?

As far as the emcee duties usually associated with the dj, the best man and maid of honor are very charismatic and comfortable in front of crowds, they would have no problem doing that.

I will also have a wedding day coordinator, so they can keep track of the timeline and make sure everything gets done.

We are high school sweethearts who are paying for this wedding entirely ourselves, so we're looking for ways to cut costs. Let me know what you fellow brides think!Laughing

Re: Do I really need a DJ?

  • I don't think you do. I was at a friends wedding and she just had music playing in the background. My fiance and I decided to also cut costs there and are going to create a playlist of music on Itunes and we are having one of our friends MC it for us. So I can't guarantee that this idea works, but that is what we are going with.
  • FI and I found an app called My Wedding DJ. it's like $1.99 but it does the cross fade for you and you can arrange the music however you want. So we are foregoing a DJ as well and my Uncle who actually used to be a DJ is going to Emcee for us.
  • You can skip the DJ, but please don't ask the wedding party or anyone else to fill in as emcee or DJ.  They should enjoy the wedding and not be put to work.  Keep in mind, if you asked them, they would probably say yes because they feel obligated and don't want to hurt your feelings.  If you want something more than continous music playing, hire someone for the job.
