Wedding Ring

Happy Sunday!

I posted a few days ago about my wedding ring, but now we're having some trouble finding one for my fiance.  He found one he really loves by Diana, but it's over $1000.  We really don't want to spend that much, so we have started to look elsewhere for something very similar.  Can anyone suggest a jewelry store that has men's wedding bands for UNDER $1000?  Possibly more towards the $750 range?  We understand the price of gold is up, which is making this more difficult, but he really wants/likes white gold.

Thanks for your help- any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!  We're in a time crunch now!  Only 2 months away!

FI and I just got our rings and we didn't see any that were that expensive for men unless they had diamonds or were made of platinum. Where are you located? On RT 17 in Paramus there is one called Diamond Exchange, or in Wyckoff NJ Devon Jewelers.

That's funny- we have been using Devon Jewelers for my rings- that's where we looked for him as well.  The one he likes that's over $1000 is from there.  We'll have to try to the Diamond Exchange.  I know exactly where that is (we're in Passaic County).  Thanks!

I know he likes white gold but they are more maintenace then say platinum because they can turn colors and need to be treated.  Platinum won't change.

They also make some really cool metal alloys now.

One of the men on this board, maybe Brad, posted a "review" of different wedding bands for men a while back.  Try to search for that because it was really interesting.

I'm surprised that the ring at Devon was so expensive. We love them there and they have really gone out of their way to make my wedding band happen. Its custom because of the fact that I have an antique (50ish years) old engagement ring so it was harder to find something to sit nicely with it.

I know you said he likes white gold (so did my FI) but there are tons of cool new metals as PP said. And I agree you should really look for the men's wedding band review....it might help you.

I agree white gold requires a little more work in terms of an occasional re-dip but my e-ring is 50ish years old and its never ever been rediped and when I do it for the wedding it will be the first time and it doesn't really need it but I thought it could use a shine. My mom had a white gold setting on her e-ring for about 15ish years and never had it re-dipped either. So if its done well the first time you shouldn't need to re-do it.

My mom has had her e-ring set in white gold and in platinum and her platinum ring scratches much more easily then her white gold one ever did. She is actually a bit disappointed in that fact.

I paid $250 for FI's white gold ring at The Jewelry Rxchange in Edgewater.

Or do you have a bigger budget because you're looking for a man's ring with diamonds? FI's was plain.

Overstock.com actually has some nice-looking rings as well.

It was User that posted the reviews, he still posts occassionally, I would try to page him (write his name in the subject of your post) He can give you the low down on all metals, gold, plat, and probably help a bit with prices too. Might be helpful if you had a pic of the ring that is over your budget, the girls could help you search similar but cheaper.

I highly recommend Thomas Jewelers in the Wayne Jewelery Exchange by the Willowbrook Mall.  My family uses him for all of our jewelery. He's honest, trustworthy, and has great prices. My husbands ring was only like $400 for white gold.

We search all over and finally bought our rings at this place, the owner Diana is great and I would highly recommend her, my engagement ring and wedding band were a great deal and the best we found! I get complements all the time, the set is a designer set and rare. It is in the diamond district in NYC. Make sure you negotiate the price.

Wow, thank you everyone for all your help.  FI doesn't want diamonds- that's one reason we were so surprised at the price.  I think we will check out the jewelry exchanges mentioned above, and also do a little more research about the types of metals.  We did get to Willowbrook Mall today and he saw one in Helzberg that was about $550 and 14k WG, so we'll be keeping that one in mind.  Again, thanks a bunch!

Highly rec Blue Nile! My platinum ering is from there and our bands will be from there as well. They will custom make bands if the ones online dont fit exactly what you want.

I got mine at the jewerly exchange near willowbrook, 14K gold and a tungsten one for 450 out the door.  I have since accumulated two more tungsten rings and 2 titanium rings.  I want to sell at least 2 of them, if anyone is interested let me know.

Regarding the gold, I don't feel like typing the scoop all over again so I will try and find my post and repost it.  But basically, you can't compare today's white gold with your mom's 50 yr old white gold ring.  It's made differently because of cost, and is alloyed with different metals.  This is why the ones today need more maint.  Hopefully I can find the post.....

    Here's User's post:

Over the past 6 months I have accumulated five wedding bands of various shapes, sizes, and materials of construction.  I started out with a fancy 14K gold one and more casual tungsten one. Since the wedding,  I have accumulated two more tungsten and one titanium.

I suppose the reasons for these purchases were::

    1.  My desire to collect and switch off day to day (I do the same thing with watches, moneyclips, pocketknives, flashlights, etc).

    2.  The effects that heat and cold have on my finger (my rings vary by as much as 1.5 ring sizes.

    2.  More importantly, not really finding the one I was totally comfortable with wearing day to day.

Before I go any further I think it's worth mentioning a little more regarding tungsten rings.  I think every guy should have at least one of these to wear while doing heavy "hands on work."  First, if you lose it, it's fairly inexpensive to replace.  Second, these things are indestructible.  You just wash them off and they don't even get a scratch on them.  Basically, after 6 months, my tungsten rings look the same as they did the day I bought them.  I wish I could say the same for my other ones.

    On with the review.....

With all of them sitting on the table, I like the look of the Tungsten rings the best.  I have one that is both Brushed / Polished, and it really looks sharp.  The Tunsten rings have a unique  "darker" silvery look to them.  They are heavy, thick, and rugged.  As a result, I didn't find them comfortable to wear on a 24 hour basis.  I basically would wear it all day, and take it off for the night by the time I got home each evening.  During the day, I always knew it was there, and would find myself playing with it, twisting it,etc often.  I found myself doing the same thing with my 14K gold ring, but since that ring is a more formal design, I only wear it when I dress up (weddings, company functions, etc)  I guess it would be fair to say that the 14K gold has not gotten enough finger time for me to get used to yet.

The titanium ring was the 5th and final one purchased, and I doubt I will buy any more in the near future.  It is super lightweight, and has a very thin wall thickness.  Basically, it fits my finger perfect and I typically forget it is even there.  I also find myself keeping it on at night, sleeping and showering with it, etc.  It has a very high polished, bright silvery look to it.  The downside is that it does show scratches and it drives me crazy.  I use some automotive polishing compound with a small buffer pad on the end of the drill once every few weeks to get the scratches out and that seems to work well.  I really hope this ring still fits me once the warm summer weather comes.

In closing, here are a few purchase suggestions:

    1.  If available, buy a ring that has a comfort fit
    2.  If you are not used to wearing rings, consider titanium for its light weight and thin wall thickness
    3.  Stick with rings that are 6-8mm in width.
    4.  If you do any heavy work with your hands, consider tungsten as an option or a second ring.
    5.  Avoid platinum, in my opinion it's not worth the money with so many other less expensive/high quality available materials.

Hope this helps, pictures to follow soon.

ps....if anyone is interested I am probably going to sell a few of my Tungsten Rings for a fraction of their purchase price.  Sizes range from 9.5 - 10.
