Up-Lighting, any recs and/or quotes?

The cheapest so far I've gotten for the main area of our L Suite is $300. The few other quotes I've gotten are $465 and up.

Anyone else get any comparable quotes?

**Edit - I'm also debating on doing it ourselves, another bride did a long time ago on these boards. It will cost about $150, and we can sell them after. The question is, is it worth the hassle.

I would worry that I didn't know enough about it to DIY and it would be one more thing to worry about on an already chaotic day. What if a light broke, or an outlet didn't work or something? Do you have the suite a day ahead of time?

Also, it's true you can sell it afterward, but wouldn't you need to sell it in LV before you went home... that would be a hassle I think.

If it were me I would go ahead and book the $300 one

Totally ok, all opinions welcome! We do have the suite the day before. If we were to go the DIY route I was planning on putting an ad on Craigslist and seeing if any locals on these boards wanted them, to try to sell out there.

But I totally agree with the stuff that could happen, and it would be way less hassle to just hire. We hadn't decided on doing it or not in general until now, because do we "need" it, probably not, but I do think it would add a nice/more reception like touch to the room.

I dont know about suites... but I am paying $50 per light for uplighting in our ballroom for the reception. They said I would need about 8 lights (and its a huge ballroom!) Its through All Night Long DJ's.

For that price, I can't imagine you'd be getting LED lights, which means you'd be getting traditional incandescent bulbs, i.e. the hot ones. I would not go that route for an in-suite reception; they will generate the same heat that several people would generate which means even just a few lights could be like having twelve extra people in the room and the A/C will already be taxed for your actual guests.

Probably better to rent and make sure you get LED lights for an in-suite. Are you using a DJ? All Night Long brought lights for our reception; just something to throw out there.

I stopped into a Guitar Center here that have them and we'd use the gel things for color, and I thought they were going to be LED, but I could be wrong. But if not, you are totally right on the heat of the bulbs, very good points for sure.

All Night Long said I'd probably need 8-10 lights, and they are $75 per light. Unless you book something else with them, then there is a discount. We have DJ Godzilla for the ceremy but no DJ for reception. DJ Godzilla is only $65 for the ceremony whereas All Night is $250.

Maybe Godzilla has some lights and can do the reception?

Yeah, those PAR-38 lamps use incandescent bulbs; same thing on Amazon, with filters, and typically 150 watt bulbs:

Good to know on the lights, thanks for looking, I would have never thought about the added heat due to the lamps! Hiring it is if we do it.

I throw a lot of parties at my house so I'm used to this issue. I run the A/C all day long and get it down to 70 before the party starts and then hope everyone gets drunk before it gets hot so they don't notice lol.

Here is a little info for everyone thinking about uplighting. Most companies out there are not using the type of uplights you buy at Guitar Center. Profesional LED uplights avarage anywhere from $150-$950 each depending on the options and intensity. There are not many companies still using the old incandesent bulbs and if they are I would not recommend them at all. Especialy in as tight of an area as a suite. The good thing about most suites in Las Vegas is the ceilings are not that high so you can get away with fixtures that may not be as powerfull as you would need in a large ball room. That being said there are some key differences in the price of uplighting.

#1 = Controlability of the fixture. All LED fixtures are able to be programmed to a specific color or you can choose from programs within the lights to fade the colors. If you want all the lights to change colors in sync with each other the lights will need to be connected with a control cable or they will need to have a wireless controler. So if your trying to save money, having the lights programmed to a single color may help.

#2 = Battery power or plug in? Most suits in Las Vegas have plenty of outlets along the walls so unless you need lights in parts of the room that have no plugs you could save money by going with the plug in lights because they tend to rent for much less than the battery operated fixtures.

#3 = There are many types of pro uplights out there. The most popular fixtures use red, green and blue led bulbs that are progammed to different intensities to create hundreds of colors. They will be more than sufficient for most brides. The higher end uplights also have white and Amber LED's to help create more color combinations but it has been my experience most colors can be create fine with the standard red,green,blue.

#4 = Number of fixtuers. This is the biggest factor in your uplighting package. The best way to get a feel for how many lights you will need to achieve the look you want is to do a search for uplighting pics on the web and count the number of fixtures you see along the ground. Many pics on the internet are using 15-20 fixtures just on one wall. It gives an amazing look but that is not what your room will look like with 10 fixtures spread thoughout the room. For most suites in Las Vegas you will have am amazing look with about 15 fixtures in the room. For more of a wow factor 20 lights should be more that enough and if your on a budget 10 fixtures will still give the entire room a great look. A good trick for people on a budget is to pick an accent wall and put all the fixtures on that wall. It will create a focal point in the room and if you are only working with a few fixtures it looks much better than trying to spred them out.

There are other factor that will cause your uplighting quotes to go up and down but my final recommendation is to make sure you are not paying for options that you may not be using. A solid color uplight placed at key locations around the room will give you a great ambiance without all the extra control options. So when you are requesting quotes make it clear to the vendor what you are expecting the light to do. The color fades and changes can be great, especially for dancing but you may need to pay a little more for those fixtures.
