Advice on Tux Vests and Ties

Does the vest and tie of a tux have to be the same color?  I say yes, my groom says no.  I hate the idea of an ivory vest with a green tie and he hates the idea of the tie and vest blending together.

Has anybody ever seen a two-colored vest and tie combo or had it in your own wedding?  I just can't seem to find pictures of this to make a better decision.  I don't want to hate his outfit, but I don't want him to hate it either.

    No, they do not need to match. Nothing about wedding attire is mandatory - it's all about what the person wearing it wants to do. (And keeping with formality is a good idea as well.)

    The guys in our wedding wore black vests and patterned ties. Green and black stripes for the groomsmen and dads, green and white stripes for my husband. I ran the idea of black vests and solid green ties by my husband, he liked it but said he preferred striped ties instead, so we went with that. MH said that he dislikes colored vests on grown men and I agreed with him.

    He's gotta wear it, not you. If he asks for opinions, give yours, but otherwise keep your mouth shut. You don't have the right to veto his attire unless he looks like an absolute fool, or if he had veto power over your dress or the bridesmaids' dresses. If it's not something you would've personally picked out but he looks O.K., then butt out. He's an adult and he can dress himself without your approval.

    I like like when the tie and the vest matches, it looks less busy to me.

    Our guys wore black vests with multi-colored pink striped ties and pink pocket squares.  Personally, I loved how it looked, especially when they took their jackets off.  H wore a white vest with a white tie, and his pocket squares were white and pink. 

    As a PP said, play around with it at the tux shop.  It depends on the color too, as some colors are way too bright to be on the vest IMO.

    Oh yes, the tux is black.  We're doing a long Cutaway jacket that looks absolutely wonderful on him.  : )
