Should calling someone a "fatty" be considered a hate crime? They are trying to make it a law in a few places in the US.

I don't think it should be labeled as a hate crime. It's offensive, but get over it.
The problem here is that people are too politically correct and soft skinned. Yeah, I've been called a fatty, I bucked up and moved on.

I think that someone who calls a person "fatty" is a total jerk but not guilty of a "hate crime".

Agree.... it's rude and insensitive just like other types of name calling, but not a "hate crime." Personally, I hope someday it's as taboo to call someone that as it is to call someone any other type of derogatory term or slur.

Agree w/ Acaponi. Since when are words a crime? I've been called all kinds of names before, things I am and things I am not... things I can control and things I cannot control. I got over it, the person behind the words mean nothing to me.

Not at all. People are too sensitive these days. I have a high metabolism and don't eat well but still stay thin. People say I look anorexic and to me that's worse.

This is why people bug me. It's completely ridiculous. They weren't threatened or harmed any in way.

So dumb. I guess I've committed a hate crime against myself then since I've definitely said I'm a fatty before.

Kelsey, I was thinking the same thing. Now if someone beat the crap out of someone because they were fat, then that should be delt with, but that is why they have other laws in place.

A "crime" is considered to be something that breaks the law. I am not breaking the law if I call someone a name. I agree that if you call someone a fatty and then proceed to beat them up, that would be a hate crime. However, just the name itself is not a hate crime. That is absolutely ridiculous.

I consider "Fatty" to be derogatory. Therefore, if a person is beating up another person and calls him/her a fatty while doing it, I believe that would, could, and should be a hate crime. I certainly hope that's the true intent behind the proposed bills.

But in and of itself, the use of a word alone is not a hate crime, even when it's cruel.
