need priest for outdoor ceremony!

Does anyone know a Catholic priest that will perform outdoor ceremonies? I tried contacting my favorite priest from my childhood church, but he said he can't do anything outdoors or even go outside his church . So now I'm desparate! I've heard that "retired" priests will do it, but is it technically recognized by the church?

I am sorry but your information is wrong. Your marriage will not be recognized by the Catholic church if you are not married inside the Catholic church. ie you cant get married outside. And you can't side step it by having you ceremony performed by a retired priests either. Actually most Catholic churches make you and your FI take convocation classes before they will marry you.

On another note, if you do choose to get married outside and then, say a year later, go back to the church to have them bless your wedding. That generally wont work either. What you would be asking for is a convalidation. And you normally have to have a really good reason for it, not 'i wanted a pretty wedding outside'. A good reason would be, you got married right before you FI shipped off to war (and sometimes that doesn't even fly with the church)

If having your marriage recognized my the church is important to you, I would sit done with someone at your church and figure out what you need to do. Before you get too far into your planning. Marriage is one of the seven holy sacraments, they take it very seriously.

  • Yeah, I was going to say if you care about the church recognizing it, you would care enough to do it inside one.  I'm a non-practicing Jew and I've even learned this from this site.

  • Sorry to say but if you want to be married in the Catholic faith the marriage must take place in a Church of God.
