July 2013 Weddings

We paid for everything on our own!

Sorry about taking a moment to brag but I worked my ass off for this!!!! I got engaged at the same time I started a new full-time job (a private school teacher with a low salary & long hours but the pay was steady and I knew I was lucky to have any job at all). My fiance convinced me (I was being bratty and very unwilling) to have 50% of our income go in to a joint savings account. At 23 years old, having money for the first time in my life and watching my friends get apartments, go on vacations, shop for luxury items, etc. was torture for me. . Then this summer, my fiance changed jobs but could not start the new one for 3 months so I supported him in the mean time. It was rough, caused a lot of fights and we lived off of very little every week. However, we never touched the joint account and my pay continued to go in for over 2 years.
Now our wedding is drawing near and we sat down to calculate every expense and what we can pay for with the money in the account. We sat down with our budget and had the best moment ever - we are DONE!!!!! Everything can be payed for and we can even start to spulrge in some areas that we were cutting back on. Now, every cent we save until July can go towards a honeymoon. It feels like the weight of the world has lifted off our backs and I'm finally starting to see this as rewarding and not just a source of stress. Anyone who says it's "the happiest time of your lives" did not have to pay for their own wedding in New York City haha

Re: We paid for everything on our own!

  • Congratulations! As a private school teacher also on a small salary, I know the struggles! FH and I are paying for the wedding on our own as well. It's hard to say no to things our friends have wanted to do knowing we need to save for the wedding. Knowing you did it all yourself on your wedding day is going to make it feel all that much greater! :)
  • I too undestand small salaries. Im a social worker for a private agency contracted through the state. Yep, small pay!! Plus, FI has been out of work for almost 2 years. I have saved what I could, but also having 2 children who have needs that you cant ignore, makes it that much more difficult. I have been saving my gas mileage reimbursment checks to pay for my gown, so what ever the total is when I go to get a dress is my budget. FI is now working, even though it is only temporary, and we will now be putting so much more away for the wedding!!! It will still be a stretch, but between tax refunds, my and FIs pay, we should be able to have the wedding we want!!!

  • congratulations!! we're in a similar situation but still have A LOT to save, since we can only put aside about $200/paycheck for the wedding...nearly there, and I know it's going to feel excellent when we get there!

  • Congrats! Feels good huh? I knew I would have enough in savings to pay for our wedding but I've cut back on spending considerably the past few months in order to maintain a good sized savings account even after paying all of the wedding vendors. It's all about keeping your eye on the prize!

It took me 5 years before I finally got a job in th field after undergrad. I even went to grad school and got my MSW hoping it would help. i ended up getting hired at my current job right before I staretd grad school.

Can I suggest substitute teaching? I did it for 4 years. Helped to bring in a little bit of money. i also volunteered for CASA and did a part time on call job for a social service agency as an advocate. Helped give me experience that I didnt have. Could never figure out the whole "you need experience to get a job, but you cant get experience until you HAVE a job " dilemma. Which brought me to volunteering!!
