Getting in Shape

Fitbit Users...

So I bought a fitbit, and I LOVE how I can conceal it and no one knows I"m using it. I also LOVE how it measures elevation because I walk a giant hill and I was working out harder than my other Pedometer could measure.

My question is, do you find the calorie burn to be accurate? It is tell me I'm buring like a 1000 calories a day which seems insanely high. Even when I don't work out I easily burn over 800 calories. Today for example, I've only walked 354 steps at work and its saying I've burned 726 calories, what? I've only eaten 310 calories... Something seems off here...

Re: Fitbit Users...

  • The calories burned starts getting counted at midnight when the day switches over. Those calories burned you burn while you're asleep (the calories burned just to keep your body functional)

    I specifically set my fitbit to assume I'm going to be sedentary all day and then give me bonus calories when I do activities, so even just walking in and out of work and doing normal daily activity I'm "earning" more calories burned.

    I can't say just how accurate it is, but it is based on your overall movements combined with the info you input into the FitBit site. I have found that it isn't accurate for stationary bike or stairmaster work, so I just do the timer things for those activities and calculate the burn another way and input it.

  • whats a fitbit?
  • Thanks Entropic, I was super confused how that was possible! I haven't been going by that count so far, I think I"ll stick with myfitnesspal to see what I"m burning because I feel like its a little more accurate.

    Jpines- Its a pedometer that has multiple functions. Check it out, www.fitbit.com. Its a little pricey but I've noticed its worth it between the elevation tracking and it tracks your sleep which for me is amazing because I sleep horribly!

    <div>Scheff - I would NOT go by the burn that MFP tells you for activites. MFP is notorious for overestimating calorie burn! The FitBit in my opinion is more accurate.</div>

    Really? Ok for example. when I swim, if I do 20 minutes of breastroke it says I burned 189 calories, which sounds about right to me. Where-as the fitbit will say I burned 1800 calories in a day... Just seems like a crazy amount to me haha!

    I think that what you're not understanding is that you burn calories all day long.  Even when you're sleeping.  All a calorie is is a unit of measure to measure energy.  Your body burns energy (aka calories) to perform basic life functions such as breathing and making your heart beat.  Have you ever heard of BMR?  That stands for Basal Metabolic Rate--the amount of calories your body burns over the course of the day if you were laying in bed, sedentary, all day.   That is what you would need to consume to maintain your current weight.  So if your fitbit says you're burning 1800 calories in a day, you would need to eat 1800 to maintain your current weight because that is how many calories you use to make your body work.  If you ate 1300 day, you'd lose about a pound in a week (500 calories times 7 days in a week = 3500 calories a week which is a pound).

    Does that make more sense?

    </div><div>Yes, this.  The fitbit isn't just measuring the "extra" calories you're burning through exercise, it's telling you all of the calories that you're burning in a single day, even if you just sat and breathed all day and did nothing else whatsoever.  Your body burns a set amount just keeping your organs functioning, digesting, stuff like that.

    </div>
  • Ahhh, ok yes that all makes sense. Its funny because I did know all of this, it just has never been a number in front of me the way the fitbit presents it. I haven't seen the calories burned other than the EXTRA calories burned and had honestly not thought of it that way. Ok that all makes sense again, thanks everyone!! :)
  • wowwwwww i just went to the fitbit website. that's crazy that's there's something that can do all that!
