Paleo Diet Questions

So I've been hearing alot lately about this Paleo Diet and was just wondering what it's all about? BMcleoadTeam - I know you have posted about this before - if you or anyone has any info or advice on this that would be great. Also I've been trying to cut out alot of processed foods and stick to healthy things but I'm not very imaginative when it comes to cooking food myself so I'm having a hard time trying to come up with recipes that keep me motivated to eat healthy :(

Re: Paleo Diet Questions

  • A friend and her husband did this, seems way too restrictive to me but they described it as "what a caveman would have eaten" so no pasta/rice/bread/etc, no dairy, no grains other than nuts.

She used coconut milk in place of milk and coconut flour in place of regular flour and califlower in place of potatoes.

Like I said, pretty restrictive and not sustainable for the long term. Oh and no booze!!!

  • Hmmmmmm no booze?!?!!? Not sure if I can handle that hahahahah. And yes that does sound restrictive especially for me who gets bored of the "healthy" food very fast! Oh if only I were rich and could have my own chef who cooked all healthy yummy foods for me :)
  • We are doing Paleo but slightly modified as my doctor suggested. We are allowing some fairly, but trying to stick to the no wheat/grain concept. It sounds more restrictive than it actually is once you start seeing some of the recipes, and as my doctor pointed out it is best used not as a long term set but instead as a kick start to eating healthy. We will eventually let ourselves have wheat/grains but by then you are so used to not that it's easy to keep that more limited. I have lost 3 1/5 lbs in a week and a half on it and feel great. On FIs itouch right now bit will share some links when I get to my computer tomorrow!
  • Highly restrictive diets just aren't healthy (unless the restriction is due to an allergy or serious intolerance) and can be dangerous. And like others said, if you're looking for long term results, a diet like that just isn't the solution.

  • FI and I did this for a couple months.  It definitely kickstarted eating healthy for us and made us feel better but it is pretty restrictive.  It is hard to eat out on this diet.  If you type in Paleo recipes in Google you should be able to find a lot.  I suggest just trying to incorporate these recipes into SOME meals but all is not sustainable.  We did it all or nothing but it only lasted 2 months which is when we visited his family who cooks southern and we just couldn't skip his mom's mac n cheese and fried chicken.  One thing it also did which is good and bad was made us feel like CRAP if we cheated.  I say it's bad for obvious reasons but I guess good because it detered cheating.  If you are going to go all out with it for a little to get things going, I suggest getting the non-Paleo items out of your house so you aren't tempted.
  • We try to stick to it but we modify and allow ourselves dairy.  It is not that restrictive if you do this, it essentially cuts out processed foods and goes back to a natural/caveman diet.

I would say 70-80% of our meals each week are paleo.  Everyday Paleo is an excellent resource and there are many websites out there but all will put a different spin on it.  We eat a lot of veggies, fish, eggs and meat for meals.  Here's a webiste I use:  http://paleodietlifestyle.com/paleo-diet-recipes/. I feel 100 times better on it.

We are allowed one glass of red wine a day and also can have gluten free beers/alcohol.  Just no soda or juice.    Like I said we do not follow it to the T.  GL!
