Calphalon Cookware

We put this Calphalon cookware set on our BBB registry. FI's coworker told him that his daughter got the same one for her wedding and she hated it because it scratched really easily. I have this problem with my current (old, hand me down) set, and it really bothers me.

Has anyone else had this problem? Reviews I've read are mixed. Is there another cookware set you would recommend that doesn't scratch?

TIA!

Re: Calphalon Cookware

  • Did the co-worker's daughter use silverware or metal serving utensils on the cookware?  I've always had calphalon and sure, eventually it will get some scratches on it, but not severe enough to warrant not getting it.  Any non-stick cookware will scratch. I only use bamboo or OXO utensils on mine and they are fine.

  • ALSO, with all but I think ONE of the Calphalon sets you CANNOT put them in the dishwasher.  Even with the set they claim is dishwasher safe, I would always hand wash.
  • Thanks. We don't have a dishwasher so that's not a concern.

I'm not sure what she used on them. On the set I have (not calphalon), I've only used plastic utensils on them and it still scratched. Does calphalon tend to scratch more than other non-stick cookware do you think?

  • Plastic TEFLON or non-stick cookware should not scratch it...I am not sure about regular plastic.  I have had mine since college (6 years or so) and it's not bad at all.
  • Ok thanks for your help!!

  • We have a few pieces of hte Calphalon Contemporary nonstick set and love it!  We've had it for like 7 months and we use mainly wooden (bamboo) or plastic tools on it.  The only thing that scratched one was when we stacked the fry pans on top of each other.  You just have to be careufl not to use anything metal on them.

I've also heard that Calphalon has great customer service, so if you have any issues they usually back their products.

Oh and FYI, the link you posted links to your registry, so if you click return to registry, your full names are listed.  You might want to change that.
  • I would suggest you try wooden utensils as a first choice as opposed to the teflon or silicone ones.  Regular plastic kitchen utensils WILL scratch a non-finish surface unless they are safe for non-stick.  Any brand of wooden utensil should be fine.  Read up on how to condition wood kitchen utensils (same as cutting boards) because you'll need to put some mineral oil on them (or any other food-safe unscented oil like grape seed oil will work).  I can't remember the exact schedule right now, but it's easy to do and it keeps the wood from drying out and splintering (which can scratch non-stick finishes).

    Hope this helps!! :-)

  • Noodle mentioned scratching pans while storing them, so I just wanted to suggest that you put a paper towel in between nonstick pans if you're stacking them.  That's' what we do, and it helps.
  • Caphalon is 100% guaranteed.  If the pans lose their non-stickness for some reason (you have food that sticks to it) or they "scratch easily," you can return it to your local BBB for an automatic exchange.

Friend of mine had a Caphalon set.  One of the pans in the set didn't have its/lost its non-stickness (which is hard to do since it's baked in.)  She took the pan to BBB, and BBB told her to go pick out its replacement.

    That was that.

I have Caphalon on our registry as I LOVE it.
  • When you get the pans, you can go online and 'register' the purchase (basically put in the serial number of the pan). Then in the future if they scratch, calphalon will replace them (as long as you didn't use metal utensils).

There are now 2 lines that can go in the dishwasher, Contemporary Cs nonstick stainless, and unison.

<div>Woah I didn't know they added that feature to the Calphalon website!  I received a pan as a gift a couple of years ago.  I'll go online and add it ASAP just in case!! :-)  Thanks, SirJulius! </div>
