Marriage Prep Recap

So FI and I did our marriage prep this weekend. It was 9-4 yesterday and today. To be honest, I was kind of dreading it. I've had some struggles with my faith and I've been wanting to be more open/more trying with it. I was dreading it because I thought it'd be God in your marriage 24/7 and I'm still working on my faith. Well, I was pleasantly surprised. The presenters were really laid back and it wasn't completely religious. It was a lot of issues you should discuss before marriage like parenting, religions, your family, finances, etc. FI and I were really proud of ourselves because we literally talked about everything they told us and had it all worked out. There was even a game where the brides and grooms split up and were asked questions. You had to guess what your future spouse said and we nailed it haha. The communication session today was a little more difficult for me. I know we need to work no some issues like his family, I have issues with his friends, and some little things like problem solving. It's sometimes hard to talk to him about how FMIL bothers me but we did the questions in the book then exchanged. One was how do you feel about future in laws. We were able to talk about it so that was nice. I tend to just be like I'm fine and bottle stuff up so I think that stuff really helped.

Overall it was a great experience and I would recommend it to everyone!

Re: Marriage Prep Recap

  • Good to hear. I've been dreading mine, too. It's not until March.
  • I'm glad it went so well!!! =)

  • My favorite presenters was a couple that has been married 25 years. They greeted us when we came in and said they saw a blonde get out of a car with a Cy on it (ISU mascot) I said yeah I have one. Turns out they have 2 daughters there and they noticed the yellow ribbon on my car too and talked to FI. Her husband was in the Army and they met while he was stationed in Germany. They presented inter faith marriage and they were so cute. He put up one of their engagement pics and was like I look at that picture and I'm still completely in love with her. You could just tell by how they talked and how they looked at each other how in love they still are. It was so cute
  • I'm glad you guys got a lot out of it.

I am enjoying ours. FI is not the type of guy to go to counceling by choice, so it was nice that my cousin required it. He is actually enjoying it and would probably recommend it. We are learning how to work better as a team. He also admitted he wants quite a few kids like I do, but he doesn't think we can afford it. It was nice to hear it. We will see what the future holds. :)

  • We haven't started our premarital counseling yet, but we went to a Christian conference this weekend that included some classes on communication in marriage and "Love, Sex, and the Bible." We went to four sessions with Josh McDowell who is an AMAZING speaker and author! One session was with Bill and Pam Ferrel, who wrote "Men are like Waffles, Women are like Spaghetti." It was all really good stuff!
  • I'm glad it went well.  I really like the book idea you used to help with communication.  Do you think you guys could use it later to help you deal with things like your FMIL?

  • I'm glad that went so well for you! I loved our marriage retreat too.
  • That is great. That all went well. We are doing the old fashion premartial counseling where we meet with the pastor and have homework assignements to do at home. Although it has been about four sessions. We both love evey minute of it. We have about three more sessions to go.

Yeah I definitely want to. I suggested we read those chapters and discuss ways to deal with things like that. We had a couple speakers talk about the Love Languages book and we really wanna do that too
  • It really sounds like you got a lot out of it.  I'm glad you enjoyed it!

  • We did an Engaged Encounter and just got back yesterday.  It was realy good for the both of us, he is Catholic and I am not. It was really nice to be able to learn about marriage as a sacrament and what that really means.  I loved their slogan, "A wedding is a day, a marriage is a lifetime," it really puts things into prespective when I get super stressed out about little details.
    Glad you enjoyed it!

It was a nice refresher for me because I went to Catholic school and FI is not Catholic so it was nice to be able to explain it in the Church's eyes
