how do bridal showers work?

What is the format for a bridal shower?  Is it usually held at someone's home?  Does that person make and supply all the food for the guests?  If it's held at a restaurant, does one person (ie the host) pay for everyone's meals?  Or does everyone pay for themselves?

A shower can be hosted anywhere. Most that I have been to have been in someone's home or a church basement or something like that. However, I have heard of them also being held in restaurants or parlors for a 'tea' themed shower.

Whoever is hosting pays for refreshments for the guests. So, if you are hosting a shower but cannot afford to feed everyone a meal you can have it during a non meal time and serve light snacks, cake, and punch.

At bach parties each girl usually pays for herself and the group generally covers the bride's expenses that night as well.

Showers are usually hosted by MOH or mother of bride or bridal party.
They can be held at restaurant or someone's house. They can be casual or formal. The hostess sends out the invitations to closest friends/family. You can make it all women or co-ed. The registry information is listed on the invitation, not with the wedding invitation. Usually games are played at the showers, below is link for some theme/ideas:

Showers can be hosted by whomever volunteers to host, and may be held wherever the hostess(es) choose to have it.  The hostess (and there can be more than one) should cover the costs of food and drink for the guests, even if it's at a restaurant.

A lot of times there are games, but they aren't a requirement if you're not comfortable with them.  My FSIL's was a nice sort of daytime cocktail party, with gift opening added in.  It was just a nice weekend afternoon.
