Weight gain caused by muscle?

I had weighed myself this past Saturday and was thrilled with the number I saw.  That was all due to counting calories and doing the free step on the wii fit for 20-30 minutes a day.  However, I started doing the 30 day shred on Saturday, and I haven't seen that number on the scale since.  In fact, it's about 1.5-2lbs higher, which is really discouraging!  Could it be because I am starting to regain all my muscle back?  I'm really hoping so, and that I'll start losing weight again.
I am still counting calories as well, and I'm hoping I'm not giving myself too much credit for how many calories I burn while doing the 30 day shred.  I give myself 150 calories for the 20 minutes of doing her workout.  RIght now, I'm about 154 pounds :-/

Re: Weight gain caused by muscle?

  • Try taking measurements instead of going by the scale to track progress.  Have you noticed your clothes fitting differently?  A pound of muscle takes up a lot less space than a pound of fat, so don't give up- keep working!!
  • Sorry, but you absolutely didn't gain 2 pounds of muscle doing 30 day shred for less than a week. Your weight fluctuates a lot during the day, so you might not have really gained any weight at all.

The best way to figure out how many calories you should be eating is by calculating your BMR. This is the # of calories your body would burn if you stayed in bed all day.

Then, follow the link to the Harris Benedict equation. This will take your activity level into account to determine how many calories you should be eating to maintain your current weight. Be honest about your activity level - sounds like you're lightly active.

So now you have the number of calories you should be eating daily to maintain your weight. To lose a pound a week, subtract 500 a day from that number. It's important to not go below 1200 calories a day so don't set a goal of more than a pound if it is going to bring you down too close to 1200.

  • It took me almost 30 days of counting calories (and working out) to notice a difference. I would give it some more time. I only weigh myself once a month because I can't deal with seeing the tiny fluctuations, I get discouraged. Take measurements if the scale is playing tricks on you!
