FI and I just bought an ice cream maker and I'm so incredibly excited. Does anyone else have an ice cream maker and/or have any good ice cream recipes to share? If not, what's your favorite kitchen gadget and why?
Aah - I want the Kitchenaid too! The warranty on Kitchenaid is amazing. Anything breaks for the rest of your life, you can send it back and they'll replace it.
The other appliance/kitchen thing I want is...this set.
Homemade ice cream rocks. We usually throw whatever fruit we have hanging around the house into the ice cream. Blueberries work well.
Once you've tried a few simple recipes, you can kinda start to experiment -- that's what I do. Sometimes I use sweetened condensed milk, sometimes just cream and sugar. Sometimes I include egg whites, other times not. I have lots of different flavors and mix-ins, too. Have fun with it!
Love ice cream makers! It's what my guy gave me for my birthday rigtt after we started dating - what a keeper!
Google for recipes - the ones in the book aren't great. The best ones are with whole milk, vanilla extract, sugar and heavy cream (pre-chill it to help the freezing process). You can add things from there - crushed oreos at the end for cookies n cream, peppermint extract and crushed up mints (the soft ones you get at restaurants in pastel colors, not the hard ones unless you wanna chip your teeth!) for peppermint stick.
My favorite is strawberry - take fresh strawberries and dice very fine, cover in sugar and let sit for an hour to produce the juice. Then dump it in after the ice cream is done for the last two mins of the cycle. Delish!!!
Gotta get another ice cream maker, ours broke :-(

I think vanilla bean is the best flavor ever, but a good custard base can be made into anything! I also love fresh mint ice cream with a splash of creme de menthe.

<div>Yes I would looove one but I couldn't see anyone spending that kind of money.</div>
You can get a really inexpensive ice cream maker that's super good - the one I got was only $45 or something like that. Not that expensive at all! Cuisinart, and it's fantastic! Check on Overstock and Amazon.
I used to have a Barbie ice cream maker. I think we tried it once and it was too much of a pain in the ass so my mom returned it. I'd say I was 3 years old.
I have the KitchenAid mixer. FI bought me the big one for Christmas but it hasn't been out of the box yet.

It looks nice and sturdy. Plus it's like a bazillion percent off right now.
I want an ice cream maker so badly, just so I can make pistachio ice cream without the actual nuts sprinkled in. I love the flavor of the ice cream, but I don't need nuts in it, too! Carvel sells a version without nuts that's pretty good, but a) I can't get it out here in the Midwest and b) it would be even better with all natural flavoring. Mmmm. WANT.
