Is anyone else having a mixed culture wedding? I am American born and my fiance is Samoan. We are trying to incorporate each of of cultures and traditions into our ceremony and reception. For instance, rather that boutineeres and corsages, the guys and our parents will be wearing real orchid leis. Myself, and well as my bridesmaids, will be wearing orchids in our hair. We have also tried to incorporate this island feel into our wedding cake, which has a simple but elegant design and cascading orchids on a base of palm fronds. Basically, we have tried to incorporate an airy beach/island feel where possible and have also provided our DJ with traditional Samoan music to mix in with the other songs. We have run into 2 problems with our planning: 1) finding island themed decorations that don't look cheap or tacky, and 2) trying to incorporate traditional Samoan dishes into our dinner. For the decorations, we are getting by with some cleverly planned DIY things, but as far as the food is concerned, our reception will be completely lacking of Samoan dishes as our caterer (along with every other caterer in our area) doesn't have a clue how to make anything other than American or Italian cuisine! Does anyone think that our limited menu option will ruin the atmosphere we were trying to set for the wedding? I'm also open to any suggestions or ideas!
