Cake question

My cake vendor put pre-made, hard sugar, non edible flowers on my wedding cake for 75 people so it wasn't super huge. I'm wondering if this is normal?

I usually see fresh flowers on cakes sooo it seem ununsual. I guess the major question would be was it what you asked the baker to do, or not?

I never thought to ask. I was clear no fondant, just buttercream frosting. I didn't think to ask if there would be any substitution for buttercream. Really the flowers are as hard as the cardboard display wedding cakes. For $3.75 a slice it seems like they cheaped out and pulled pre made roses from a bin.

I  found out that the vendor uses "royal icing" on their cakes for the flowers. They say that it's lighter than buttercream flowers and they do it on all of their wedding cakes and claim it's edible.  Something that I would never have thought to ask at the tasting.
