Pre-Ceremony

How does the "getting ready before the ceremony" work? Do the bridesmaids all get their hair and make up done? Does the brides family pay for that? Does it all happen in the bridal suite? I don't think there is enough room for 5 women to get their hair done in my bridal suite. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

It depends. In my wedding, we all went to the salon together that morning, then got dressed in the bridal suite at our venue. Each girl paid for her own. I did not make them do it. I just said "Hey, I'm getting my hair/makeup done at this salon, I can make an appointment for you, if you want to get yours done too. They charge $x for hair and $y for make up."

Do all of your bms WANT their hair and makeup professionally done? If they are, make sure they are prepared to pay for it themselves, if you are not paying for it.

I think traditionally the bride's family pays for her hair/makeup, and the bridesmaids pay for their own.  However it's really flexible.

I've been a bridesmaid 3 times.  In 2 of the weddings, the brides requested updos and they had a friend come over to their apartment and do everyone's hair.  The 3rd wedding was a very casual beach wedding, and everyone did their own hair (I had short hair at the time and just blow-dried it and curled it, which didn't matter anyway since the beach was really windy that day).

My wedding is a fancier wedding (dinner, etc.) so I am planning to get my hair and makeup done professionally.  I've decided to let each bridesmaid do her hair however she wants to.  If they want to get it professionally done that's fine, or if they'd prefer to do it themselves or enlist a friend that's fine too.  But from prior experience, it can be really fun for everyone to get ready together as long as you have sufficient mirrors / power outlets / sinks etc.
