Tipping?

Hey girls,

I just started thinking about this and wanted to ask your opinion (sorry if this was already asked-I was off this for 2 and a half weeks).  what are you tipping your vendors and are you tipping if its their own business? Thanks in advance!

(our DOC will be setting up all our DIY stuff, orchestrating the rehearsal, making sure my list of must have photos are taken, organizing all vendors that day-where to set up and giving out all the final payments due that day, confirming final payment amounths with vendors prior to wedding)

Re: Tipping?

  • I'm so glad someone asked this! I'm not sure what we are doing. Almost all our vendors are the owner of their business so I wasn't sure what would be expected. I am interested in what everyone else is doing.

  • I've been reading up on this.  It seems that if they are the owner of the business, then no tip is expected.
  • Here's the knot's tipping cheat sheet:  http://wedding.theknot.com/wedding-planning/wedding-budget/articles/wedding-vendor-tipping-cheat-sheet.aspx

I'm not planning on tipping the photographer, the DJ I'm not sure about - he's one of the owners but he'll also have an assistant with him.  I'll probably do the $20 apiece for the ceremony musicians, tip is included with the venue and the limo, I'll need to give someone money to tip the bus driver, and for the hair/makeup I'll handle the tip for everyone.

I just need to remember to get the cash together before the wedding and designate someone to hold onto it/hand it out.

  • I was also wondering the same thing.

The Photographer and Hair and Makeup Artist both are the business owners.... I'm already paying them enough ... I'm not sure -  I mean I feel like I should tip but I guess it depends on how well of a job they do.

The restaurant and limo have already figured out gratuities into the price.....

I guess I'm going to play it by ear to see how everything goes and if I feel like someone goes above and beyond I will definitely be tipping.

  • I feel like if they did a job that was OVER and ABOVE then they get a tip.  Whether they own the business or not.  But if they do a mediocre or just OK job, no tip.  Even if they aren't the business owner.  But in general I hate the idea that you have to tip for every freakin' thing in the US and no one does anything extra to earn it.

    *end rant*

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.

  • thanks for all the info! yea i mean I am paying lots for makeup-we had to gurantee a certain amount. and then same with photographer. i may tip the wedding planner if she is awesome that day and then maybe the dj and photbooth attendant since they are not the owners of the businesses
