Top Hats

Does anyone know where to buy affordable top hats? I am looking and all I can find is $500 ones or costume ones.

Also does anyone know what I should be looking for in top hats, some descriptions list height but I do not know how that translates into appearance.

Thank You

I don't know if you've tried e-bay, but try looking for silk theater top hats.  Theater props are usually less expensive, and silk would be more of a fancy look than the typical wool hats at a lot of men's stores.  Traditional top hats (late 1800's to early 1900's) I THINK were covered in wool, and they'd be pretty expensive.  My dad wears hats still (not top hats, but nice men's dress hats) and his hats run at least $150 each.

    Hope that helps!! :-)

  • Is this for the BP?  If so then they may be able to rent them with their tuxes.

  • @kellya01 Thank You for the information. It is very helpful

@jagore08 It is for the groom and groomsmen but we are not renting tuxes. The men are wearing black pants, shirts, and vests with a colored tie. We looked into renting but it was so expensive.
  • Properly made new hats are pricey. Materials are very costly and so is labor. If you want something relatively cheap, go with something used or vintage. Ebay or local vintage stores are the easiest places to look.
  • @CMGR Thank you for your concern, but we have seen pics online and think that it fits the vibe we are going for.

@cqbride Thank you for your suggestions. I will start looking on ebay and local thrift stores.
  • There are plenty of vests out there which do not have a cinch and buckle, by the way. And they're not all specially tailored and super expensive. My DH wears one from Men's Wearhouse when we ballroom dance and it looks really sharp.
  • Thank you all for the suggestions :) My Fi thanks you as well
  • Is there a costume shop near you? I don't know when your wedding is, but costume shops may have top hats to rent that would be a higher quality than the party store type, but don't make you go broke either. Are you just using them for fun photos or did you want them for the whole ceremony? If you are using them for fun, I don't think the quality would really show in photos unless you they are real close to the camera.

I wanted top hats for the GM too but through Tuxedo Junction, you had to purchase them in a package with a cane and gloves which would have tagged on another $50 for the GMs... we decided not. We plan on checking out Halloween store before the wedding.
