Menu tasting NEED HELP!

I'm getting married @ Ballyowen, NJ. I'm going for the menu tasting next month and was told to pick 2 salads, 2 appetizers and 2 entrees. But how is it a "tasting" if I'm picking one beef and one chicken? Should I not get a few different beef dishes and a few different chicken dishes? I thought a tasting should be a little bit of everything and then I'll pick the best... Please share your stories...Please help!! Thanks.

Yes, what you said makes sense to me.  I can't help you much on how they should be becuase mine wasn't what I thought it should be either!  First, they didn't a tasting until AFTER you booked.  So if you didn't like the food then what?!  Then she told us to pick I think 5 items off the list and she would pick the most popular 5 items picked by all the brides and we could taste those.  I told her I'm a vegetarian and wanted to taste at least one veggie dish, ut I guess it wasn't popular enough so I couldn't taste it.  My FI doesn't eat red meat or pork so he only got to taste the 1 chicken item there.  It was kind of annoying and not really worth our time to drive out there to taste 1 pasta and 1 potato and 1 chicken item.  We ended up just guessing on what we wanted which were the more simple, basic items.

What you said sounds right.  We selected 3 apps, 2 salads, and 3 entrees.  They chose the sides we tasted.

Just be thankful you are even getting a tasting. I called my venue to schedule a tasting and was told that they aren't allowed to do a tasting. I thought oh well, I'll just go to the hotel restraurant and order similar dishes so I can get an idea because it is the same chefs. No, I won't because the menu's are different on purpose so the restaurant stays "unique"

I will be randomly guessing at our menu. Thankfully, everyone I've spoken to who has attended other weddings at this hotel has said they have good food, I just am not sure if I will like it as I am  a picky eater.

Our venue/caterer doesn't do tastings, either.  I am keeping my fingers crossed that since it is brunch food it will be less likely to go wrong!

We had to pick which entree and hors d'oeuvres before we had our tasting. Then when it came time for the tasting we had two of each option to try. So two fish, chicken and beef. Then they selected a couple different hors d'oeuvres for us to choose from.

Our tasting was two starters (so we could try either two soups, two salads, or one of each) and then two entrees (we tried two different chicken dishes).  I wish we could have tried more, but oh well...  Have fun at your tasting!

Our venue holds a big event every year for all the future brides and grooms. We can bring I think 4-6 people with us. They have a dj and tables set up with different linens, chairs and centerpieces. They pass around every appetizer so we can basically sample them all. They also basically give you any choice of whats on the menu. So we will each pick a different item and then sample each others as well.  We can also do a private tasting but Im sure its not as expansive as the tasting you get at the event..

Court, that sounds like a blast!  My wedding is destination, so we're planning on guessing for the buffet, but picking options that generally are hard to mess up (i.e. chicken & steak) with veggies.  I guess you have to trust them, right?  :)

</div><div>My venue does this too.  They have one each month (except for December and May because of Christmas and peak wedding season) and you can bring up to 4 people and attend as many as you want within reason.  The contract said 2 max, but the coordinator told us they only made that rule because some lady went to each one for 2 years.  So we went to 4.  It was awesome.

Our venue just held an enormous tasting for all the brides and grooms getting married there in the next year. It was sensational. Tons of butlered hors d'oeurves to try, two salads, two chicken entrees, two beef entrees, three fish entrees (which I sadly couldn't try since I'm now allergic but my fiance loved them), a duck entree, and three different kinds of cake, a snowcone martini bar, a chocolate fountain, and cheesecake lollipops. Sadly, some of the menu items we really wanted to try from before we got there weren't provided but we really couldn't complain after the variety of the selection and how delicious so much of it was. They even had signature cocktails, wine, coffee, tea, etc. It wasn't a private event whatsoever and they charged if we brought anyone in addition to the two of us but because of everything we got to eat that day, we now understand why! I think they're semi-annual so we may get to attend another before our wedding next year.

Our venue doesn't even offer a tasting.  We just went by all of the reviews from friends and family who have been to weddings there and relied on the knot girls in our area to tell us what they got/liked/hated.

My fiance and I were also given only very limited options for our tasting and we felt like we were flying blind especially when choosing the cocktail hour hors d-oeuvres.   So I said to the chef, "What would you pick, if this were your wedding?"  I knew he would steer us to the best stuff.  When I asked that question he looked really excited to help us.

I would suggest this strategy to anyone who finds themselves in the same situation.
