Top hats & tails

My FI and dad both want to wear top hats and tails for our wedding.  Our wedding is going to be formal so that's fine with me.  My mom pointed out men shouldn't wear hats indoors, and our wedding and reception are both inside.  So I'm wondering, when would the men have the top hats on?  Would it only be during the time we take pictures?  Has anyone else done top hats, and if so, how did it turn out?

    DH wore a top hat, and he wore it for the entire event, including indoors.  Perhaps that wasn't strictly proper, but since he wasn't hurting anyone by it (and it made him really, really happy), it's one of those etiquette rules that I think is perfectly okay to bend.

    Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284

    Your mom is right, hats are not to be worn inside.  Is your ceremony in a church?  Men definitely shouldn't wear hats in church, as it is seen as disrespectful.

    Our ceremony is at a winery.  August in St Louis can be brutal so we're having the ceremony inside so people don't have to deal with the possible heat and humidity.

    If they are wearing tails, i.e. white tie (assuming it's an evening wedding.) then all of your male guests should be in black tie, at least.  Is it a black tie or white tie wedding?

    I actually want my Fiance to wear a top hat. He looks so handsome in the fedora hats to me, so at least for pictures I wanted him to wear it.
