Not great. It's got a really gummy texture and tastes like sugary play-doh.But, it is better for outdoor weddings because it holds up well against the heat. Experienced bakers should be able to do a buttercream cake that has the appearance of fondant. HTH!

  • Yuck, just wondering because I see the fondant cake pictures and they look nicer than the buttercream...I was going to go for buttercream anyway...lol

  • It's mostly used just for the way it looks.

However, it doesn't stop my FI from eating the sh*t out of it.  UGH, I get diabetes just thinking about it.

  • I've heard it's just for looks and you're supposed to peel it off the cake before you eat it. Yuck, not good for a wedding IMO. We're going with buttercream. Fondant does look really nice though.

  • We paid an extra $100 for fondant on our cake. I'm not a huge fan of the taste, but it is edible and our cake is going to be gorgeous :-)

  • It also depends on the type of fondant. My FI (he used to be a professional chef), makes a kind that made of marshmellows, and it tastes really good, like marshmellows! But most if it tastes pretty gross.

  • My shower cake had fondant flowers, and they weren't bad, but I wouldn't want to eat a ton of it (like the amount of icing on a cake). It is smoother looking, especially if it's in heat at all, since icing melts pretty easily. Thankfully, our reception is indoors, so we are going with the cream cheese/buttercream frosting.

  • Yes, fondant is gorgeous, but personally, I think it's disgusting. The type I have had is made out of a marshmallow concoction, but it's rubbery, hard to chew, and super sweet. I would rather just have a butter cream that tastes awesome and actually looks like a cake. If you are paying for a dessert for guests to enjoy, why would you want to have a type of icing that guests will have to peel off in order to eat their sweet? just my humble opinion :)
  • I hate it. They make cakes look beautiful, but it's not for the taste. Yuck.
