FI and I went to a wedding this past weekend and I have to say that for the amount of money that was spent, I was unimpressed and unmoved. The DJ never announced ANY names of the 14 member bridal party including the name of the B & G. Played music that no one could dance to, and only for half hour after dinner-- which was a buffet that took WAY too long to get people through. It took an hour and a half to get 100 people through it, no seconds, the open bar ran out of things before dinner, closed right after dinner, they took down coffee service right after the cocktail hour so there wasnt any coffee during cake. I mean don't get me wrong, we had a good time, but it was because we had a great convo with the people we were sitting with. And I was a little annoyed that the B & G never bothered to thank the guests and pretty much stayed in one spot all night. You had to go find them to talk to them ( which was in the hallway near the bar -- which was not set up in the same room as the reception). I just think, what is the point of inviting people to your party if you are going to ignore them all night? Grrr. Oh well. It ended up being a good night, but we weren't disappointed that it ended early at the reception.
Re: I must be picky or spending too much time on the Knot
At least you enjoyed yourself! And you can be happy in the thought that you've put so much planning into your own reception; if you enjoyed yourself at a reception that seemed 'botched' imagine how much fun folks will have at yours!
I agree though, it's probably overwhelming for the B & G to try to greet eveyone at their reception, but come on, everyone came to see YOU. At least have the courtesy to thank everyone for attending.
My pet peeve is brides and grooms who don't "work the room." I understand that you may miss a few people because everyone is moving around, but you have to at least try. Or have a receiving line. I understand its "your day," but people have traveled, gone out of their way, and given gifts to celebrate with you so the least you can do is thank them.
I went to a destination wedding in Colorado last summer and my cousin was the worst bride EVER. I was there for 4 days and she didn't speak to anyone from her family. She spent the entire weekend with her wedding party, acting like they were too cool for everyone else. We had a fun trip despite that, but I was definitely annoyed that I spent that much money to see her act like that. OK, END RANT.
Venue was Embassy Suites Southfield, food wasn't bad, actually pretty good, but the buffet and bar just were not handled properly. And coffee, omg. That was horrible. Like the bar handed out CANS of coke and bottles of water. ????? Do people actually do this? I don't know. I guess I should also say that I have been a server on and off for the past 8 years and still work in a country club that does weddings on a weekly basis, and I was disappointed.
The LAST wedding FI and I went to this year was an ATR after a DW. The B & G put on the invitation " Formal Adult Only Reception". So FI and I dressed up nicely ( standard suit, standard littleblackdress type deal) and got there- the B wore a sundress, the G in khakis, dinner was cold fried chicken on paper plates with potato salad and plastic silverware. Laughed it up big time. But the two cannot be compared.
EDIT : I understand that people who do less formal receptions or receptions at home may hand out cans of coke and bottles of water, please do not take offense. I have just never seen a hotel do so during a reception.

Been there done that, but it was a friend. I am sorry it was your cousin. I would have made sure the family grapevine knew how upset I would have been to have traveled all the way to CO to be ignored.
It really sounds like they didn't care too much about their guests and were very focused on 'their day'.
And even if they didn't get to say hello to everyone, which happens, they should've gave a brief thanks toast to everyone at dinner.

Ya I understand you don't always get to say hi.. But they didn't bother. No toast thanking everyone- the Best Man briefly thanked everyone for coming in his speech but nothing from the B & G. I don't know. I'm just irked that I had to go from Waterford to Downtown Detroit to Soutfield and get all dressed up and take a half a day off of work for someone who couldn't care any less if any of us had or hadn't shown up.

The Embassy Suites was one the locations that I looked at. The woman I met with for one was too busy to really sit and give me detail info on the venue. Total amateur. She then didn't follow up with after the visit. Glad I never used them.
