QOTD 1/18

Why did you decide to go into the career you went into/are working toward?

Re: QOTD 1/18

  • I love sports, medicine and helping others. Athletic training combines all those in my career. There are days I hate my job because teenagers can be very ungrateful but seeing someone return to play after an injury is a great feeling.

  • I loved the design aspect and creativity of Advertising. I did a week of classes at an art school in Chicago and loved it. I even won a scholarship. I didn't go to that school but it reaffirmed what I wanted to do. I started double majoring in graphic design and advertising but didn't like the design classes. I'm glad I work at our paper because I found I love the sales aspect
  • I took carpentry in high school. I started at my job when I was 16, working in the manufacturing shop (building cabinets). I knew I didn't want to "build" the cabinets for the rest of my life. II got my bachelors degree business with a double concetration in Management and Fiance. I've been out of college for 8 years and I have yet to use my degree. I'm still at the same company since I was 16, but now instead of working in the shop (moved to the office when I was pregnant 11 yrs ago), I am now a project manager. I love my job most days and I usually get along great with my bosses. I especially love it when they tell me that I am the best employee that they have (company has 50+ employees).

I am still working towards bettering myself. I am one who needs to strive to learn more and get better at my work. If I ever feel "content" at my job, then I know I need to find something else. So far, 13-1/2 years later, I've been able to keep with it. I plan on taking more AutoCadd courses and continue my education (whether it be certification classes or something else).

  • I am a financial planner, but I actually started school to be a lawyer and after a 'court week' where we went and helped a lawyer for a week, I decided I didn't want to give up my life to be a lawyer and made the switch to finance (not sure why at the time finance), but like Chelsea I really would like to teach at a university so I will be working towards that over the next few years...

  • I started out as a Chemistry major, with a goal to be a forensic scientist (when I was a kid I lived Sherlock Holmes and wanted to be a detective). I switched to biochemistry before school even started, then switched to biotechnology after winter quarter. That summer I realized I didn't want to be in a lab all my life. I remembered taking an electronics class in high school that I loved, so I switched to electrical engineering technology. Fast forward to today, I've graduated and am working as a server manufacturing engineer. I'm awful at design work, but this allows for some electronic immersion without having to design stuff. I actually started as a co-op by being introduced to my boss at an industry advisory board meetingon campus. Now in working full time here. I love it because there's a troubleshooting, investigative side to this job, I get to travel to Toronto once a month, and I have a great boss. Definitely lucked out with this!

  • I am working towards getting a job in elementary education.  Right now I'm just subbing.  I originally wanted to be a caterer but for some reason as high school was ending I just didn't want to go in that direction.  I still love baking but don't know if I could do it as a career.  So I got into teaching because I love working with kids and when they are younger they are so excited to learn new things.  It's so rewarding when you see something click in their heads for the first time and know that they got something.

  • I am currently running a business with my sister.  There is need for female and minority-owned businesses in the construction industry, however, I'm finding I'm not enjoying it as much as I used to.  I am currently looking for something different in NC.  I really would love to work for a non-profit in a fundraising/events position, but we'll see what happens - I'm just very thankful to have a job at this point!

so true! My Mom owns (& runs) a landscaping company and my Dad works for her! haha
  • I fell in love with the business field in high school.  I luckily, had the best teacher for business.  My plan was to go to college and get as far away from my small home town as possible.  But senior year of high school, I met FI and after college, moved back to this small town to be with him.  Luckily I landed, one of the five jobs available in this field and now here I am. :)

  • I started as a Teller in high school at a Credit Union and worked my way up while I was going to school. I did everything from Teller to Loan Officer to Branch Manager and I hated it. My degrees are in Marketing which I LOVE!!!! I ended up getting a job at a Radio Station for a little bit and then moved to Advertising Sales for a TV Station... Loved the actual job. Hated my company and boss. I know work in Commercial Sales at HP (which is not my ideal position) However, I just started  7 months ago and really just wanted to get my foot in the door.. I have already talked to my manager about Career Development and getting into a Marketing Position!

I chose Marketing because I am very creative and love to come up with really cool marketing ideas and promos. I would have liked to have done a little more with Graphic Design but I do pretty well there for not having actual training.

  • I majored in TV in college, not really knowing what I wanted to do. After college I moved to NYC and worked a couple of "normal" jobs until one day I quit the job I hated and started freelancing. The first job I applied for as a freelancer was on a reality show and that lead to another and another. And now 5+ years later I have sort of found a niche in post-producing. I love it because I can still sort of have a life and still make some deliciously trashy TV.

What shows? Trashy reality TV is my favorite escape!

I've always loved science and majored in biochemistry in college because chem majors had too many math courses to take, and at the time I wanted to go to med school so being a bio major wouldn't stand out. I had taken A&P in high school, but when I took it again in college I hated it. Since the economy was crap when I was going to graduate I ended up talking the GREs and applying to grad school for biochemistry. Somehow I got into a PhD program where my education is paid for and I get a stipend; my parents still don't believe that I get paid to go to school. I'm half way through my 3rd year in the program, so I'm almost half way to my doctorate which is both exciting and depressing, since I still have no idea what I want to do after I graduate.

  • I am an accountant-I chose this degree because Im good at math and like dealing with money? Im not realy sure why I chose it, I think I just didnt really know what else to do at the time.. I dont think Im going to stay in the field forever. I want to eventually run my own business with FI but it will be a little ways before we can do that, but i think having a business degree will help.

  • I took Cosmetology in high school for two years, and fell in love with the hairstyling portion. Both my teachers were former hairstylists and switched to teaching. They both encouraged me to get into an apprenticeship. As of right now, I'm a manager of a salon and one of the senior hairstylists, with my journeyman certificate with a red seal in Canada. I want to go back to college for Education. I'm hoping I won't have have all the weekends and late nights that way for when we get around to having babies. =]

  • Sounds like everyone really loves what they picked to do for their careers.  I'm iffy on what I decided on.  I got my degree in accounting.  I guess I looked at the possible jobs I could get after college (what would make good money, be challenging) and accounting sounded interesting.  I hated my old job, but my new one is alright.  There just isn't anything too exciting in accounting, it is a tad monotonous.  I don't know what I would want to do in the future, but I can't change my job right now since we need to keep our finances in line with the new house and wedding coming up.  I'm not sure that I would love any job anyways!

  • Right now I'm working in marketing, and just kind of fell into it. I think at some point after this year's election in going to try and get Ito politics. It's a passion of mine and FI's and I think it would be so in and fulfilling. Eventually I want to be a stay at home mom and own my own business of some sort. FI wants 4 kids and it'll cost more to put them a in daycare than if be making.
  • Luarabulb- I know some people who work for the FBI and a lot of them got degrees in accounting.

For me, I grew up in a school (both Mom and grandma were teachers) so, teaching is in my blood.

  • Haha, I don't even know what I'm going to do yet. I graduate in may with a BA in Dance, and a minor in Nutrition. The past few months I've been thinking I was going to go to Vet school. I LOVE animals. For real, I am obsessed with all animals...dogs, cats, birds, horses, cows, reptiles, ferrets, squirrels, everything! I would love to work with them everyday and help to make them better. I would also like to be a personal trainer/dietician. FI and I want to open our own gym someday, and I'd love to work as a trainer. I really have no idea what I'm even working towards yet! It's starting to stress me out.

[I am going to be an elementary school teacher Wink]
  • Well, I kind of feel like a loser compared to all of you, but that is okay! haha

I went to school for a few months but had to drop out. I was a full time student living an hour out of town one way and working full time also. I got really burnt out and didn't make it. I am kind of glad though, I wouldn't have met my FI and I would have a ton of debt for a career I don't want anymore. I was going to school to be a Surgical Technician. I have wanted to be a Paramedic since high school (we had a 4 year medical program and I graduated as a First Responder, with college credits) and it is still my passion. I find it facinating!

Right now I want to be a stay at home mom and when the kids are old enough, I think I will persue my career in the medical field. They actually have a Paramedic program now, so that is helpful. (They didn't when I went to school, it is actually a private company so it is much cheaper also!)

I am happy where I am at the moment and couldn't ask for much more. (I would like to get paid a little more, but at least I have a job!)

  • I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a teacher.  So in high school I did teacher cadets and loved it! I will graduate in May with a degree in elementary education.
  • I have always wanted to be a teacher. I would play school with anyone I could! In HS I thought about becoming a pediatrician but I worked for one and had to hold a kid while he got stitches and decided that was not for me! In HS I worked in a preschool in my school but decided they were too young for me. I got certified in grades 1-6 and teach 3rd grade. I think it's my favorite grade! I love my job :)
