reception cost- should i look for cheaper venue

We are very close to booking our venue.
We have 100 guests. THe price per person when you add tax gratuity and site fee comes to around $265 per person. That seems like an awful lot of money to me and I am wondering if we should look around for a better deal. it's a beautiful place but I know we could settle for a typical catering hall and save about $7000-8000 .

Re: reception cost- should i look for cheaper venue

  • Does that include food or drinks?  Or entertainment?  If not, I would seriously consider looking somewhere else.  That's a whole lot of money for just the venue.

  • $265 a person?!?!

My venue includes 4 hours open bar, food, my wedding cake, centerpieces if I wanted to use them and a few other things and I am only paying $60 per person including taxes and gratuity.

  • Honestly I would look for a cheaper one...That is a whole lotta money per person.

My venue includes dinner, center pieces, my cake, a late night pizza buffet, the hall for 6 hrs, and alcohol for 5 hrs.

I am paying 48 per person and that includes tax a gratuity

  • What exactly does it include?  If it includes open bar and all food, then I'd say for New England and New York it's only the higher end of average.

I'm wondering exactly what the cost includes also.

I see you live out on LI which is definitely a factor in the price. I don't think that price is totally off the charts for our area. NYC, LI, & NJ are in the top 4 most expensive places for a wedding (Chicago is the other, if you're wondering).

I'm getting married in NJ & I'm paying about $135pp.

    My price includes:
    • Food (We're having an endless cocktail reception. There will be 20 passed hors d'oeuvres & then 4 passed desserts, all served constantly throughout the evening as well as 4 stations.)
    • Full open bar
    • Non-alcoholic beverages
    • China/flatware/stemware
    • Linens
    • Cake
    • All labor (waiters, bartenders, maitre'd, floor captains)
    • Taxes
    • Gratuities
    • DOC

  • Wow that is crazy expensive. I understand that our area can get really expensive but we got lucky with $95 per person which includes:

Food (Cocktail hour-- passed hors d'oeurve butler style and cold food, appetizer, salad and entree)
    Cake
    Coffee and Tea
    5 hour premium open bar
    unlimited champagne and quality wines
    imported and domestic beers
    rolling cordial cart
    assorted sodas and juices
    linens
    flatware, silverware and stemware
    etc.

  • Omg that's massively expensive. Ours is roughly 120 max 140 includes food, alcohol, cocktail hr. I would research it talk them down, unless that's average going price for weddings in your area. But ouch that's expensive.
  • I'd pose this question on your local board. That's a lot regardless where you live!
