I was thinking about giving out steamless wine glasses as a favor at my wedding with my fiances and my name and our wedding date on it, is that enough or should we find something else to go with it?
The general concensus around here is that personalized favors are a bad idea... do people really want a glass with YOUR wedding date on it? Probably not... Edible favors are what are encouraged around these parts...
I love to go against the concensus generally... but this time I'm gonna agree with them and BEG you to not give these out... there are tons of things you could buy that would be a way better way to spend your moolah!

Ditto Katina. I've been around here for years and there have been many, many discussions on personalized favors. In all honesty one of two things would happen if I were a guest. I would either accidently forget to take it with me, or (most likely) DH and I would take them home to be polite and ditch them. People don't want mismatched wine glasses with someone elses names and wedding dates.

I don't want anything (except food) with someone else's names and wedding date on it.
What if you put candy within the glass? I'd enjoy that favor! Don't personalize the glass though. You'd probably save money by purchasing candy instead of the engraving.
My husband and I got etched regular wine as favors. Normally, I would say no. However, these were etched with a really pretty swirly design that matched their invitations. I liked them., and my husband and I use them when it is just us. No names, no monograms...just a really cool graphic.
My baby girl is a married woman...and now my baby girl HAS a baby girl. Time unfolds in such an amazing way. I've been blessed!
I would definitely stay away from the name & date. No one else wants your name & date on stuff they are going to be using at their house. If you want to use the wine glass idea, that is OK but I like the idea of putting candy or something edible inside it. IMO the only great favor is an edible favor.
I agree with pps that putting your wedding date and names isn't the best idea. People don't want to take home a souvineer. While I'm in the tiny camp that says that edible isn't always better, I definitely wouldn't want something with someone else's name on it.
Ditto PPs. Anything with the couples names and date, I would most likely leave behind or take and feel guilty when I tossed it later. Sorry..but that is the truth. Also, would it be one glass per person? or couple?
Definitely no etching of the B and G names and wedding date. No one cares that much, except maybe your parents. While we're on the topic, don't put your names and/or your wedding date on personalized BM and GM thank you gifts either. Again, no one cares that much about your wedding date.
I wanted edible favors, so I started with the bride & groom boxes with my favorite candy in the bride boxes and the grooms favorite candy in the groom boxes. My FMIL insisted there be a "keepsake", so I decided to add on stemless martini glasses (we love martinis and they double as candy bowls) that are personalized to keep the peace. Some people love that stuff- others hate it.
My advice would be to do the wine glasses if you want to do them, fill them with candy, and let the people who hate them do what they want with them and the people who love them keep them. And if no one takes them- the people who *do* like them get a complete set!
I wouldn't recommed using personalized names and dates, as most people do not keep the gives except parents and In-laws and you've wasted money on the personalization if the guests dont't take the glasses with them.
I went partical... i gave out personalized music CD's in an organza bag with a scratch off ticket and bookmark. The CD had 16 of our favorite songs and was has the graphics of a wedding bouquet digitally added to the CD wih out names and wedding date.. The cost was less than 1.00 per CD The organza bags I purchased the organza bags from www.giftsintl.com for 5.95 for 30 bags in a pack. The bookmarks I purchased from partyblock.stores.yahoo.net

FYI - CD favors get tossed in the trash quicker than probably any other favor.
I would not want anything with your name and date on it unless it was a cookie with your name and date in icing. And I definitely wouldn't want a single random wine glass.
Yeah, one my DD's did the CD thing and I can guarantee you they are left behind or tossed. I got that through the family. I still have mine of course, but why do I want to listent to THEIR favorite songs?
I feel like the wine glass could be a bad idea for a few reasons. I also agree that no one wants your name, initials, or wedding date on their stuff. Maybe leave them plain and fill them with candy? Or have a design or image put on them that matches your wedding theme if you are just dying to personalize.
But think about your single guests... a single lonely wine glass... it just sounds depressing to me for some reason. I would feel like my friends were saying, "here, go drink away the sorrows of loneliness while these couples enjoy a toast" ;o) Not that you are actually thinking that, or that most people are as pessimistic as I am, but you have to admit, it seems plausible.
My favorite story about personalized favors is this... I was packing up my grandparents' kitchen when they were having it renovated and my grandpa is a bit of a pack rat. We found an entire set of shot glasses with the couple's names but my grandparents' must have been friends with the parents or grandparents of the BRIDE, because they had no idea whose wedding they were even from, despite both first names and the GROOM's last name!
My roommate gave these away at her wedding...I thought they were great favors. I don't mind having their name and date in our house. She's my friend, and we like remembering her wedding. Just letting you know that other people may have a very different perception.
