Cocktail Hour Music

What is everyone doing for cocktail hour music? Is it necessary? My wedding is at St. Clement's Castle and cocktail hour is mainly outside. Our DJ is only playing during the reception so we were thinking of hiring a string quartet to play for cocktail hour. Is this necessary?

Re: Cocktail Hour Music

  • I got married at the Riverhouse and luckily we just had to give them a CD and it plays through their BOSE speaker system.  One of my BMs' boyfriends is a music teacher and had a ton of jazz music so he through together a few CDs for us.  They also had an ipod hook-up.  So I'd ask St Clements first.  Free and does the job!

  • We are having our ceremony and reception at the same location so the dj is doing it.  CMAC's idea I think is a great one, especially if you have budget limitations.
  • you could look into the Vitamin String Quartet- they play classical renditions of pop songs, and if st. clement's has a sound system you could easily just compile a mix and play music.

I think music is always a nice touch, but I don't think it's make it or break it.
  • We are having a harpist play at our ceremony and she is going to contiune through the cocktail hour.  We thought that a harp was a unique alternative!

This is one of my fave parts about our wedding so far - we hired a guy who plays on old victrola! He'll be playing old records from the '20s, '30s, etc, and dresses the part w a straw hat, seersucker suit, and handle bar mustache. Def different but I think it will be fun.

  • I don't think it is necessary unless you really want it.

What does your package say regarding your DJ? Most packages include cocktail hour but if not definitely check with your venue, they may have background music to use for the time period.

  • We are having our DJ set up for the cocktail hour.  It was not important enough for us to have any type of music so we defaulted to the most cost effective option.
  • our DJ is doing our ceremony, cocktail hour & reception. If our budget allowed, we would have live musicians (e.g. harpist/violinist @ ceremony, band at cocktail hr/reception)

I agree that music is nice; otherwise I feel like it would be kinda quiet and awkward as people first start arriving, you know? If you can afford the musicians, go for it--otherwise a DJ or iPod would be great.
