Event planners are great because they can usually come up with ideas that you may never have even considered or thought of and will take a lot of the planning stress off of you.

    Things to consider though...
    1) Are they going to be budget friendly?  Remeber they cost money as well...do you have an extra $1000 to $3000 or more in your budget?
    2) Do you really not have the time to plan your own wedding?  Weddingn planning is suppose to be fun and exciting and also a way to make your wedding personal and one-of-a-kind.  Do you really want someone who may have only met you once or twice planning your big day?
    3) Sometimes they just get in the way.  A day-of coordinator would be beneficial if your venue doesn't already have some one to do that job, but a full time event coordinator could really hinder your vendors from doing their job.  An event coordinator may know about a lot of wedding things but telling a florist how to arrange flowers, or a baker how to bake their cakes will make for unhappy relationships.  If you hire reputable vendors then they do not need to be watched like a three year old, they will know what they are doing.

IMO, planners are really not necessary unless 1) you have a crap load of money and 2) if you work 5 jobs, have 20 kids, and no family (meaning absolutely positively no time to plan).  I have planned my entire wedding (even DIYing a lot of it) all by myself (well, maybe a few grunts of approval from my FI) and I have a full time job and a house to take care of.  I have really enjoyed the process and will be very proud of myself when I see it all come together on our big day!
