Engagement Party Ideas

So my fiance and I are hosting our own engagement party - really a glorified barbeque with our family and friends, and I've been trying to think of fun ways to separate it from being a normal barbeque lol Obviously the invitations say engagement party, but we're pretty low key (hence the bbq in the first place) and I just wanted something simple/sweet to symblize our engagment.

Anyway, I was reading Real Simple magazine today and they had a really cute idea - have a little "station" with slips of paper and pens, have people write a message or a wish for the couple, curl the paper around the ribbon and keep in a pretty dish that the couple will read out loud later and then can use to scrapbook with.

There was also an idea to fill glasses with water and place a votive candle in each, then add food coloring to the water to make really simple/cheap centerpieces.

Does anyone else have other suggestions/ideas they'd like to share?

Fore warning, you will probably get reamed on here for throwing your own engagement party.

That being said, it would be kind of fun to have guests write out bits of advice for you too, but I'm not sure I'd read them outloud. 1.) it would take a while and 2.) some people give advice that you might not want someone, say your grandmother, to hear :)
  • Yeah, I know many people frown on throwing your own party, and it's not exactly proper ettiquete, but truth be told we just like to entertain; we love seeing our family and friends and there really wasn't anyone else that would "throw" a party for us.  It's not like we're planning our own shower or anything - we just wanted to have a celebration of our engagement with the people we care about, ya know?

Dont feel bad we're going to combine ours with a house warming party. Its just going to be a potluck/bbq after we get settled in August. Our family's really dont have the means right now to pay for a party and we dont really want that kind of animal. What we do want is everyone to come to our new home when we're settled and spend an evening with us.

  • It's tradition for the groom to plan the engagement party for the bride in Fi's culture.  That being said, no games are played or anything. There is entertainment, like a trio or mariachi, food, drinks and some dancing.
