It is absolutely 100% out of my price range, but I was wondering if anyone has even been there? I love the fact that this place has the largest building in the world and the architecture there is amazing. They also have the worlds first underwater hotel = ) and have an indoor ski resort.

Hey There,

I was actually in Dubai last year for two days before heading to another place. I'd love to help you in your search. Think of Dubai like Las Vegas of the Middle East. Dubai was built in attempts to show the world the Middle East is a place for Westerners to do business.
There are a lot of hotels in the Dubai area so there are many possibilities for price ranges. There is a lot of money in the town because of the amount of business done there. Also since it's a muslim state there isn't really a party scene, you can get alcohol at the Western hotels and that can be expensive as well as worldwide well known chefs that are in the hotels are also expensive.
The only thing is that I felt and others have felt the same way that it was not what we expected and sort of boring after a short time. They seem to be lacking culture if you're looking to experience something a little different.

if you're looking for really good meals, amazing skyscrapers, and attractions I would say go to New York City or London

No culture? Are you kidding me? Original poster, I live in Dubai and can 100% confirm that Dubai is full of culture, architecture, beautiful resorts, weather, shopping and so much more. You can go on desert adventures, dune bashing, camel rides, shopping in the souk's, tours of gorgeous mosques and so on. As for the no party scene, well that's just another thing that is quite large out here. We have more International headline Dj shows than most other places in the world. Shoot, we've had Rihanna, Prince, Aerosmith, Beyonce and tons of other A list musicians perform in just the last year. Add on top of that the worlds richest horse race, the F1 Grand Prix, world's fastest roller coaster and you've got yourself one heck of a trip!

I guess it depends what you mean by "culture." If culture means cool stuff to do...yeah, there's plenty in Dubai! But as far as having a prominent, evident history and tradition, not so much. For example, no one really seems to know what "Emirati food" is/would be. There's Middle Eastern food but not really a particular Emirati specialty.

Also, you can spend weeks in Dubai and hardly ever see or speak to an Emirati citizen. So that local flavor aspect of culture is missing as well.

BUT don't ever let anyone tell you there's nothing to keep you busy in Dubai! It's amazing! Just bring lots of money

Another thing to love about Dubai: flying Emirates. I think Emirates has the best planes and the airport is wonderfully clean and easy. The NY Times periodically has pieces on the current best websites to use to find discounted fares on international airlines and I've managed to find Emirates tickets for less than much dingier airlines. I really want to spend some time there (I love the idea of an underwater hotel) but at the very least, it makes for fantastic layovers.

I was in Dubai from 19 - 25 and 30 September this year and LOVED it. It was SOOO hot but we had a fantastic time. We stayed at the Radisson Blu Dubai Creek and spent the first day lounging around the pool trying to acclimatise after coming from Scotland where it was freezing. In the late afternoon we walked down to the Gold Souk where I bought our wedding rings! Two of the days we spent doing the big bus tour which I would highly recommend. We did the blue line first which takes you to the newly developed areas including the Palm, Mall of Emirates and Dubai Mall (+ Burk Kalifah) and the red line the following day which includes a free one hour cruise up the creek. We spent a huge amount of time shopping

One afternoon we got picked up from our hotel and went dune bashing and camel riding followed by a BBQ in the desert with entertainment (I think the tour was organised by Orient Tours) There is heaps to do and if PP got bored she only has herself to blame! Underwater Zoo at the Dubai Mall, go to the 124th floor of the Burj Kalifah, dinner at an amazing Thai restaurant on the water opposite the Burj, spectacular fountain shows, etc, etc. Food and drinks are on the expensive side but you can catch taxis everywhere cause they are so cheap (and its too hot to walk).

On another note, we also visited Muscat and stayed at the Shangri-La. That was AMAZING and I am tempted to go back for our honeymoon
