Nixing "Here Comes the Bride"

I want to walk down the aisle to something fun and upbeat.  Any suggestions?

Re: Nixing "Here Comes the Bride"

  • What sorts of music do you like?

Personally, I'm doing part of the Star Wars soundtrack because FI and I are total shameless geeks.  I know brides who have walked down the aisle to the Beatles, to country music, to less traditional classical music, pretty much whatever.
  • I think that's a great idea - pick a song that means something to you or goes with your wedding "theme"

  • I am walking to "Somewhere over the rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwo'Ole. We are getting married in our backyard by the pool, I just really like the intro on this version of the song. Good Luck!!

  • I was thinking of "Seasons of Love" from the musical Rent....but I don't know if that would seem to cheesy.
  • I was at a wedding this year and she walked to  Make you feel my love by Adele. It was awesome.

  • If you're getting married in a church, make sure you're allowed to use the music you want to.  My church is strict, and we can only use approved church selections. No modern or contemporary non-religious music allowed.
  • I think "Seasons of Love" would be a beautiful choice!!!  I don't think it'd be cheesy at all.
  • I walked in to Ben E. King's original version of "Stand by Me"...sweet but still kind of upbeat and fun.  I also strongly considered "Sara Smile", the same version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" PP's mentioned (love that song!) or Colbie Caillat's version of "Kiss the Girl" from The Little Mermaid.
  • I'm walking in to the an instrumental version of "Edelweiss" from The Sound of Music. It's recognizable but not overdone, in my opinion.

I'm all for having modern or non traditional songs, but I tend to favor instrumental versions over the original recorded versions.

<div>This. My pastor is particular about what we can and can use, which is annoying. He's fine with older, secular music, but newer stuff is iffy to him. He also doesn't think wedding music should have words. Oh and we can't use any Beatles music because John Lennon was atheist. Whatever. I bet I could find some dirt on Wagner (who wrote "The Bridal Chorus" aka Here Comes the Bride). It always tickles me that some people don't know that song is from an opera and not at all religious.  </div>

  • My attendants walked in to guitarists playing Ray LaMontagne's "Hold You In My Arms" and then I walked into "Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" from the Mighty Wind movie (my hubands favorite song).  The "Kiss" was a surprise that I worked out with the guitarists and hubby loved it.

About Wagner: he was such a vocal anti-Semite, and supported Hitler, so his music is completely taboo for Jewish weddings. It's one of the first things my rabbi said when we started talking ceremony music, "no Wagner!"

For my processional, I'm trying to find a good orchestral version of All I Ask of You from Phantom of the Opera. No luck yet, but I'm hoping!

this... picking something or a band (especially if your guests know that you're a big fan) will really put your special touch in the ceremony. I am personally not walking down the aisle to "here comes the bride" either so more power to you!

  • We have begun discussions about songs, and are both electronic music lovers.  We are not marrying in a church, so have no concerns about clearing our music with anyone.  We are thinking about Vangelis since we both have a connection to his music and it is grand and beautiful in our opinion.  Laughing

Have fun with it and make it special for you and your FI!

The trio I'm using for my ceremony actually has this on their list of  songs that they can play. Are you using outside musicians? They could probably help.

I'm walking down the aisle to a compliation of "Spring" and "Harvest Time" from Little Women. The music is aboslutely beautiful, and it has sentimental value since it's one of my favorite childhood movies that my grandmother introduced me to. Plus, we're getting married in the Spring... It's just a great fit. There was no sheet music available for it though, so I had to get someone to put together an arrangement.

  • I', walking down to "Someday My Prince Will Come" it goes with our Snow White Theme...Go with a song that speaks to your heart. It is an important moment seeing each other for the first time. Good Luck!

  • There are really nice instrumental versions of disney songs. I've heard "once upon a dream" from sleeping beauty being used, as well as "a dream is a wish your heart makes" from cinderella. I am personally using the instrumental version of "kiss the girl" from little mermaid - it is a beautiful acoustic guitar.
