Need Recs for San Antonio/Austin/Fredericksburg

HALP!!!!!!!!!

I voted in favor of going to the concert in SA because I am ridiculous.  It's on a Wednesday night, and it would be nice if we could make more of a trip out of it than just a one night stay.  However, we don't exactly have a ton of money to spend on a trip.

I'm not a well-traveled Texan - does anyone have an recs of what we should do?  I was thinking maybe SA for two nights and then either coming home during the day on Friday OR staying another night in either Austin or Fredericksburg.  Anything free or cheap to do is right up our alley -- nature stuff, walking down the RIverwalk, eating at some cool local places, etc.

Lay it on me.

  • When we went to SA we went to the Alamo and the wax museum.

I would try to find a good deal on travelocity or similar site. We stayed at the Crowne Plaza on the riverwalk for a pretty decent amount.

The Riverwalk is fun.  Also, we are going this year, too, and we are going to check this out:  http://www.naturalbridgecaverns.com/hoursPrices.aspx. Not free, but not too too expensive.   Not sure if that is appealing to most people, but hey we have a three year old and don't drink lol.

I have only been to Austin once, but I loved this place for food: http://www.freddiesplaceaustin.com, and I had really yummy soup at the 1886 Cafe and Bakery at the Driskell downtown.

  • It seems like Groupon and Living Social have a lot of deals down in the Hill Country you might keep your eyes out for.
  • We used priceline to get a good deal in SA. We stayed right on the riverwalk. I for the life of me can't remember the hotel.

  • OOH OOH OOH.  PICK ME!

So, on our honeymoon we loooooved just walking around the main street area and shopping and foods.

We stayed at The Cotton Gin Lodge, which is great if you want privacy.

Stop by a shop called Der Kuchen Laden -- it's lots of kitchen stuff, and really adorable.  I had to fight to not spend all our honeymoon money there.

Underneath Der Kuchen Laden is a little restaurant called Rathskeller's.  We didn't go there until our last day because it was really hard to find, but they have GREAT breakfast!  I had DUCK HASH.  DUCK.

    Other great foods:
West End Pizza Co is great.
The Auslander is a great bar -- we got there too late to have food
House Wine has great selections and cute home decor
Der Lindenbaum -- Nom nom nom
Wheeler's Cafe -- if you want a hint of their greatness, check my honeymoon album on FB.  Cornbread as big as YOUR HEAD.
And the Cabernet Grill -- great for a romantic date.  It's the restaurant at the lodge, and it's not open on Sunday or Monday, I think, but it is AMAZING.

    Wineries:
    Messina Hof
    Grape Creek
    Pedernales (our favorite)
Becker (we actually weren't impressed with the wine, but the lavender farm was great and the building itself was cool)
    Torre di Pietra

We went to a few that were pretty not-good, but I can't remember their names.

Thanks, Amanda! I would LOVE to go to wineries but with H its not an option. :/ I'm sure there is plenty of shopping and eating to be done there in place of it! :

  • J and I have talked about working our way through all of the Texas spots featured on DIners, Drive Ins and Dives (Food Network), and have gone to a few in town so far. There are quite a few in SA and Austin that look amazing, and one that sticks in my head for Austin was a food truck (on 6th St I think?) with amazing sandwiches. I have a hard time watching because I am not a big Guy Fieri fan, but in one TX episode he had Matthew McConaughey on and I had to watch.
Steiner Ranch steakhouse on Lake Travis is awesome, and they have live music on the patio on select nights. Lobster mac and cheese yum yum yummy!

That sounds great! Salt Lick BBQ and Vespaio!!!
  • Do you need hotel rooms? I typically get wicked deals with my company and we have a lot of starwood properties down there.

  • OMG, y'all are making me so hungry!  Courtski, I would LOVE to eat at DDD places -- we love stuff like that.  I will definitely have to look into this. :)

Deborah - I've found one place I'm considering but I'm oh-so open to suggestions!  Shoot me a PM or a text if you have any ideas (if you don't mind and that offer is still on the table).  BTW, are you around any time this week around 5-6:30?  I still need to bring you your stuff!

I think you're right about Austin.  Let us know what you decide.
