Hand Cancelling LIES!

So I was talking to my post office about hand cancelling my invitations.  They told me they dont do it themselves but I could use the stamp to do it.  BUT then they said that it really didn't matter.  That all mail (envelopes) regardless of how it is stamped goes through a machine.  They said long ago hand cancelled envelopes were handled differently but that today that is no longer the case.  Everything is electronic and all mail must be counted.  Soooo basically they said they give hand cancelling stamps to us brides because we are convinced that is the way to do it and they are trying to humor us, keep the line moving, and get us the heck out of their hair.  So it may not be worth running all over town to find a PO you can hand cancel your invites.

I'm happy to hear I'm not the only one that's had this issue... although ours was with our save the dates (they were thicker and therefore more bulky).  Long story but we took the STDs to the post office and they said to mail them we would pay extra postage (it was like $1.60+ for each one!) and they would hand cancel the envelopes so they wouldn't be run through the machine.  Well we come to find out probably 80 - 90% of our STDs were broken by the time they arrived because they were in fact run through the machine!!  I was so upset and embarrassed that they were all basically broken!

    That's horrible!

I asked them why people still think they won't be run through a machine and they said it's just something we get told and so everybody wants to do it.  I also think a lot of PO people are just mean and probably clueless.  They either dont know that it doesnt make a difference or don't care if your mail is damaged.  The folks at the PO were nice enough to say I could still hand cancel them if I wanted but that there was no way to avoid the machine.

Man, that's annoying - but I have to admit, I'm at the point here where I'm starting to care a LOT less about things like hand-cancelling, haha. Our save the date's all seemed to make it pretty much intact (FMIL's was apparently "totally messed up", although I'm not sure how accurate that is since I didn't see it) and one got lost in an address forwarding situation, but all the others to my knowledge got there.

I just tried to make sure that everything was flat and nothing stuck out or could be broken or ruined inside (other than a little bit wrinkled) and I think they'll be fine.

I'm having to let things go at this point and now I'm glad this is one I can without thinking there was something I could/should be doing as a "good" bride, haha.

We got ours hand canceled at the Bridal Veil, OR Post Office.  They got a really cool postmark, and showed no signs of having been through a machine.  Instructions are here, for anyone who is interested.
