Costa Rica or Jamaica

Our HM is in July 2013. We are torn between the 2. Has anyone been to either of these places during July? Any thoughts??

Re: Costa Rica or Jamaica

  • I've been to Jamaica, although not in July.  I wasn't overly impressed.  It's the only place I've been where we didn't leave the resort for safety issues.  I think Costa Rica might be better.
  • I was in Costa Rica at the end of June.. Apparently it was the rainy season, but I didn't even notice.  Fiance and I both really enjoyed the trip and definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to go there!  (Siggy picture was taken in Costa Rica.)

  • I also did not really like Jamaica. The beaches were just ok, and there are definitely safety issues. A little kid tried to steal our camera while we were in a resort area. We are actually going to Costa Rica for our honeymoon and are really excited about it. We are staying half of the time near the rainforest at Arenal Nayara, and the other half on te pacific coast at the Westin Playa Cochal. Good luck!

  • I went to Jamaica in April as part of a cruise. We did 2 excursions...they were VERY touristy. There were people all over trying to sell you things and it really took away from our time there. A few children jumped over the fence into the park to try to sell us things. If you are going to Jamaica, stay at an all-inclusive. Hope this helps! Cool
  • Couples swept away in negril Jamaica. We jut got back from our honymoon and it was awesome!
  • What do you want to do on your hm?

We went to CR last summer for our anniversary.  We did a little bit of everything - saw the cloud forest, got mud massages, went hiking, whitewater rafting, ziplining, visited hot springs, saw tons of animals, and relaxed by the pool.  In 12 days, we went to four cities.  The nice thing about CR is that the summer is green season so it's more affordable, plus everything really is so green and lush.  We loved it.

That said, Costa Rica isn't known for its beaches.  If you like a more rugged beach, they are beautiful.  If you want powder fine white sand, I would recommend Jamaica.

We are headed to Jamaica in March, but we've decided to stay on the cliffs.  We'll be splitting our stay between The Rockhouse and The Caves.  We don't plan on doing anything other than relaxing, cliff jumping, and eating/drinking allllll day!

Just depends on what you're looking for. :)

  • We've been to both and really enjoyed both, but they are totally different.

We went to Costa Rica with my hubby's family 6 years ago and stayed at a family resort.  Costa Rica is really beautiful and you definitely want to spend as much time as possible off the resort seeing the island.  My sister just looked at the splitting her honeymoon in between the Westin and Arenas Del Mar.

My husband and I have been to Jamaica a few times as a couple and have really enjoyed Jamaica as well.  We really loved Sandals Royal Plantation- it is much much smaller than a normal all inclusive and the service is outstanding.  That being said, there isn't much outside of the resort to do.  We did venture to Senor Frogs one night with some of the other couples and started to feel a little "unsafe" as the night went on.  (Definitely something to do during the day when all the cruise tourists are there.)

Did you look at St. Lucia?  We stayed at Sandals La Toc there and really loved St. Lucia.  It is very similar to Costa Rica in that it isn't very touristy and there is tons of things to see and do off the resort.

We have a great travel agent that always helps us find a destination and resort for what we are looking for.  If you'd like her info, PM and I can send it to you.  Good luck!!
  • Agree with PP.  I have been to both and I preferred Costa Rica.  If what you want to do is hang out at a resort on a beach then I would go to Jamaica.  If you want to do a more active trip and more exploring on your own than I would go with Costa RIca
