Anemone and Peony season!!!

My wedding is June 1st, and I seem to be having a problem with florists, with the flowers I want.  I want to get a few different quotes from florists b4 I coose one.  Problem is every florist I talk to says something different about anemones and peonies and even hydrangas.  Some say June 1st is too late for anemones and peonies for my weddings and others say they are peak season.  Some say it's too early for hydrangas and other's say it's peak season!  Any ideas to when these are in season, if I can have my dream flowers??

Re: Anemone and Peony season!!!

  • I have seen numerous questions about flowers that have very definite seasons on the Knot boards.

My response is always this: there are certain flowers that have a very brief growing season in nature: lilly of the valley, lilacs are flowers that are very difficult to coax into growing out of season, and if you can get them their cost is prohibitive. I have both in my garden and they religiously bloomed EVERY year the second week of May.........until the past 3-4 years when they have bloomed 1-2 weeks earlier or later due to Mother Nature. If I had my heart set on planning my wedding around my own garden, and had chosen a date I was certain to have these flowers, I would have been sadly disappointed.

Peonies are also like this. I have 2 glorious peony bushes that bloom every year for about 2-3 weeks, but never at the same time each year. They are outdoors, and grow when they are ready based on how mild the winter was, how cool or warm the spring was, and how much sun and rain they've received.

I have a forever blooming hydrangea that blooms on "old wood", in other words, it doesn't have to be new shoots. However, it may or may not bloom the exact week I want some "new blooms".

I can totally understand wanting the flowers you've always dreamed of for your wedding. Planning around Mother Nature is never a good thing. I think you have to pin your florists down on when they think they'll be available, and how much it would cost to get them if they are NOT in season. A florist will give you a quote for in season and out of season, but you will pay a high surcharge to get out of season flowers you have your heart set on, if they are available.

I have seen hydrangeas available on multiple online floral websites year round. It's possible some growers have found ways to get these to bloom in greenhouses.

Sorry I don't have better news.
  • peonies and amemonies ARE available...I used them all spring and into july. The price does vary and if you have a budget wedding ,these particular flowers may not be the best choice. with that being said,my feeling about the brides bokay is......get exactly what you want and everyone else can carry inexpensive flowers.

I wanted peonies and anemones but the florist could't guarantee the quality even if I did pay more for it (something about the black in the center of the anemone getting damaged in shipment).  I just couldn't take the chance so I decided on getting silk.  I did not regret, the flowers were absolutely beautiful.  Check Etsy.com.  The name of the store is love the blooms.

This appears to be a popular subject this week on the boards, hope this information helps someone.  I know I was weary of fake flowers, but they were lovely.
