So Sick of Eating Healthy & Working Out....

I've been eating extremely healthy for the past 2 months....I'm a 15 year long very healthy vegetarian and been following sparkspeople and weightwatchers and have only gone from 140 to 136. I workout 4 days a week, strength training and cardio. I am so sick of putting in all of this hard work only to lose 4 pounds. Does anyone have any advice? I'm only 5'2 so every pound counts! I'm also sick of sounding like the crazy person that won't drink or go out or have fun anymore until after the wedding. Can anyone relate? :(

Re: So Sick of Eating Healthy & Working Out....

  • losing the last bit is always tough (I'm at the same stage and am just comig out of a six month plateau). Are you eating enough to support your activity level?

I'd suggest changing your workout routine completely for a week or two. Bodies adapt to training and getting out of your comfort zone might be just what you need. You say that you do strenght training and cardio - why not try yoga for a while?

I totally get your frustration. I'm in the process of revamping my diet and workouts again. I'm 12 lbs away from my goal and have lost 40 so far.

Good luck - the accountability thread here is awesome for support and ideas.

  • I'm also 5'2" and I also had a very hard tme getting below 135.  I think you need to consider whether or not your body is happy at this weight.  Our bodies are pretty smart, and when you get down to those lower numbers, it becomes harder and harder to lose weight--your body needs some of it!

I'm also wondering if you're taking measurements or progress pictures at all.  Especially with your already fairly low weight, your body can change considerably without the scale changing much.  If you're not already, you need to be tracking your progress in other ways.

Also, if you constantly feel like you're depriving yourself, you're doin' it wrong.  While I applaud your willpower, the best weight loss plans are lifestyle changes, and all healthy lifestyles should have room for fun, occasional indulgence, and the things you love to eat and drink.  If you're having that much of a hard time doing this, perhaps you can post a couple days' worth of your intake and what you feel like you're missing out on, and we can give you advice on how to work those things in in a reasonable way.

<div>I totally agree with J&K that our bodies have a comfortable weight it wants to be at... And it will be very difficult for yout o get below that number and STAY below that number. </div><div>
</div><div>Also, with strength training, as mentioned before, you may have "only" gone down four pounds, but that doesn't mean you lost 4 pounds of fat. You may have lost 10 pounds of fat, but gained 6 pounds of muscle. This is why we don't trust the scale!! A bodyfat % scale or measurements will give you a more accurate depiction of how well your efforts are paying off. </div><div>
</div><div>I also wanto to point out a couple things... </div><div>Just because you're shorter than me doesn't mean that my "every pound" counts less than yours. I'm sorry... but I'm tired of that from people shorter than me. Just because I'm taller doesn't mean I have an easier time and doesn't mean that it shows less/more than you. It COUNTS no matter our heights. :P </div><div>
</div><div>Also, you mentioned that you're a "healthy vegetarian'... And I'm not sure what kind you are but most vegetarians still eat dairy products, as well as heavier fats to make up for not eating meats.  </div><div>Remember that not all calories are created equal. If you're getting your net calories in for the day, but a lot of them is coming from cheeses and white bread, you may not be doing your body justice. This could be stunting your progress.</div><div>Of course, we have no idea what your daily food intake looks like, so this may or may not apply to you. But I know my girlfriend's main diet has been olive oil, breads, avocados, tofu, cheese, etc and that's a LOT of fats, albeit healthful ones. It still adds up. </div><div>
</div><div>It may be time for you to rethink your diet and how well you're balancing foods, proteins, carbs, fats, etc. Are you a clean eater? Because that has been a HUGE help to people on here. </div>
  • Thanks Ladies! It helps to know I'm not the only one. When I say healthy vegetarian, I'm ovo-lacto, so I eat eggs and dairy, but almost all are low / fat free. My primary diet consists of tons of fruits, veggies, low fat dairy, eggs, legumes, whole grains, nuts (portion controlled of course, boooo), and meat analogs like seitan, TVP, tempeh, tofu, and the occasional overprocessed veggie burger. :) AND WINE!!! :D I eat pasta occasionally....but not very often.

As far as measurements....I'm kicking myself for not taking them!! My fiance keeps telling my how much smaller I am but all I see in my head is "4 pounds. That's it". My dress fit completely differently when I went for my final fitting, and my boobs are actually shrinking...something that I didn't think would EVER happen. They are actually proportionate to the rest of me now. Now that I write all this, I realize I sound crazy. I think I just needed to know that I'm not the only one out there struggling pre-wedding. For instance, tomorrow is my birthday...and my fiance is making me breakfast in bed Smile (so handy that we received one of those breakfast trays for our shower!)  and I'm already counting the calories and limiting myself to ONE mimosa. I SHOULD be saying "eff it! It's my birthday!" and had to sound like a complete @ss to my mom when she said she wanted to take us out for my birthday and I turned her down.

I think I DO need to change my routine. I also know that I need to try the consuming more calories thing but I'm SO afraid to. I am such an easy gainer, it's crazy. I've lost and kept off 43 lbs since 2007 (I had a bad year!) and I guess in the back of my mind I'm just so paranoid I'll gain it back. My fiance is such a huge support. He can't gain weight to save his life, and is a meat eater, but eats vegetarian and healthy 90% of the time even though he could totally eat pizza and cupcakes every day (which is what I'd totally be doing if I were him!). He makes fun of me all the time because he says my version of "going overboard" is a bun on my veggie burger or something.  Sigh....anyway...thanks for listening and thanks for the tiips! I think I'll be able to relax a bit once the pressure of looking amazing on my wedding day is off. I am NOT limiting myself on our honeymoon in Jamaica AT ALL!! I am indulging to the enth degree that week and I cannot wait. Watch....I'll actually lose weight that week!!

    Thanks again, fellow knotties. :)

  • You're definitely not the only one, I so hear you.  I hate being "that girl" who won't drink anymore because of my wedding diet, but a few drinks adds up to hundreds of calories.  It's just not something I can fit into my plan, even once in awhile, and still stay within my calories for the day, unless I'd rather drink instead of eat!  And I know an above poster disagrees, but I hear you about being short, too.  I'm also 5' 2".  Weight loss is hard for everyone, no doubt about it, but 5 lbs does look different on someone who's 5' 2" vs. someone who's like 5' 9", it's just a fact.  My best friend is 5'7 and looks _very_ thin at 130.  When I weigh 130 I look fine, but certainly not thin-thin...just regular.   No real words of wisdom, just figured I'd pop in an comiserate.  Good luck to you!

  • I don't think that that was quite the point that firsttimer was trying to make.  Of course 130 looks different on someone that is 5'9" than it does on someone that is 5'2".  But I think she was saying that in the long run, a pound is a pound is a pound, whether it's on someone that's 7 feet tall or 5 feet tall.

  • I'm in the same boat! I've actually gained 2 lbs in the last month. I've beem working out 4 times a week and eating very healthy. Muscle does weigh more than fat though, I've noticed my clothes fitting better. So I've just stopped obsessing over the scale. If I'm going down in clothes size I dont really look at what the scale says.

Are you're clothes fitting better, can you see a more tone figure? If so the working out and eating is paying off and you may be gaining muscle and losing weight at the same time, which would be a reason you aren't seeing the numbers on the scale drop as much as you would like.

I wish there was a magic pill! :) Good luck and keep up the hard work!!

<div>Thanks! Yes, that's pretty much what's happening! I was very excited to put on jeans today and have them not be snug in the waist! Score! I really just need to get over this number on the scale thing. I soooo wish I'd taken measurements, that way I'd have concrete proof that I've changed, lol!!!! You keep up the good work too, my friend!</div><div>Laura</div>
