High school student for engagement photos

Hey, has anyone ever used a high school photography student to take engagement/save-the-date photos? I was toying with the idea, but I'm not sure what the chances are of finding a student who could do at least a decent job. I'm not looking for fancy--saving money is the goal here. Haha

Re: High school student for engagement photos

  • I wouldn't use a high school student, but maybe a college photography major. In most schools, a high school student would only get to take one photo class at most. Or ask around to your family, friends, and co-workers for someone they know who is an amateur photographer willing to do it for your budget.

  • Were you looking to do this for free?  Or pay them something like $100?  I don't think engagement portraits are very expensive.  We haven't decided whether or not we even want to do them personally, but as an option with our photographer, they're only $300.  And if I'm going to take the time while we march around the park for an hour taking photos, I think I'm going to want an end product that looks very good.  And I feel like that has more to do with the photographer knowing how to pose us, how to make us feel comfortable in front of the camera, and a whole bunch of things that come with experience and not a few college classes.

Only you know what you can afford and I'm not making any judgements in that regard, but if it were me, if they're important enough to do, they're important enough to spend just that extra little bit.

  • Our save the date picture was one that a friend of a friend took at another wedding. We didn't even plan it that way. We decided not to do engagement photos so that we could splurge on our wedding photos. We were just going to do save the dates with no pictures. However, we met this girl at a friend's wedding. We asked her to take one picture of us, and she was just super nice and suggested she take a bunch of them. The wedding was outdoors in a gorgeous location. There was this one photo that was just the right mix of color and background and we both looked great in it. We then decided to use it for our save the dates.

Like previous posters said, engagement photos are (usually) not that expensive especially if you booked your wedding with that photographer. However, if you really want to keep it inexpensive and you are just looking for one good photo, I'm sure you can find a friend to do it. I can think of at least 3 people on my Facebook feed that post amazing photos, but are not professional photographers that I would definitely reach out to if I was in your situation. Don't you know anyone that just takes very good photos? I wouldn't recommend this for your wedding or if you wanted a full shoot, but there has to be someone you know that could take a bunch of pictures with the goal of having one good shot.

  • Our STD photo is one that we asked a random stranger at an apple orchard to take for us this fall on our regular, run of the mill digital camera. She was SO sweet and took 4-5 for us when I mentioned I was hoping to use it for our STD, and we got 3 perfect ones. I don't think you really need something astounding/professional for the STD.

  • Unless the student was 18, I wouldn't even think about it. If something went wrong or they got hurt, at a guess you would be responsible if they are not an adult. Engagement pics are also meant to be somewhat romantic. Not something you would want an under age stranger kid shooting. And not too many parents would want their high school kid alone with a couple of strangers.

I don't agree with other posts. I've seen great work from HS photography students. If they are willing, or have something to show of their work why not let them do it? For liability concerns that were addressed, meet them in a public place (like a park)! A HS student may even shoot your photos for free to use in his/her portfolio!
  • Hi, I don't know if I would use a high school student but I found a great photographer on Craig's List believe it or not!  We loved her so much that we booked her for our wedding photos!  She's up and coming and was great to work with.  Her photos were phonomenal!  Here website is www.ktraficantephoto.com/

We had an hour photo shoot and got over 200 shots in!  We paid $150 and got all pics back within a week, touched up on a high-res CD.  Check her out!
