Cruise ship wedding reception

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with cruise ship receptions. I am Catholic so I would be getting married in the church and then I would like to go on a cruise ship to have the reception. Can anyone give me more information I would like to go to Alaska on Celebrity cruises.
Thank you

Re: Cruise ship wedding reception

  • Are you expecting all of your guests to take time off of work and pay for a cruise, and otherwise they don't get a reception?  If so that really isn't appropriate.  Get married, have a reception, and then go on the cruise for your honeymoon.

  • I went on a cruise to Alaska two years ago.  It was awesome.  It was also very, very expensive.  Are you really asking your guests to pay for an Alaska cruise for your wedding reception?

Get married in the church.  Have a reception somewhere.  Go on a cruise for your honeymoon.

I would NOT spend the money for an Alaska cruise for a reception.  My kids would not be able to afford a cruise for someone's reception.  Actually, most people I know would not take kindly to being told where and when their vacation for the year would be just because it's your wedding.

"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • I only think this is okay if you are planning on something VERY SMALL.  Instead of celebrating with (and paying for) 200 people at a traditional reception, you can pay for your parents, siblings and their spouses to celebrate with you on a cruise.
However, you cannot have a large church wedding if you go this route.  Maybe a preist can marry you at home in front of just your closest family before you leave.

I read in a wedding magazine once that a couple paid for all of their very close family members to go on a three day cruise with them as part of their reception.  But, they didn't have a traditional reception with dancing, etc. It was just a bunch of family events.  I don't think cruise ships have large "convention" type rooms that you could do a reception in where you could dance and decorate it the way you want.

What if instead you hired out one of those really nice yachts that have fancy dinner cruises for your reception?  Like the Oddessey for example? that would be a wonderful reception to have.  I'm sure it would be extremely pricey but you never know.  You could always ask and see and it would definitely be less pricey than paying for a cruise for your guests  It would also be completely private unlike a cruise ship.

Here's the link for Odessey cruise ship weddings in Boston.  I really think this is the next best thing to a cruise. Consider it.
  • So I am planning on getting Married on a cruiseship (also going to Alaska) We are going to do the 10 day cruise.  You do it in a port of call.  We happen to be leaving from San Francisco.  So we are going to have the wedding in SF on the ship as well as the reception.  This way the guests who don't want to or cant sail with us can still attend.  I think that is a way to get around it.  And hey,  they have chapels on the boat so you can have the best of both worlds!
