when should we register???

We got engaged November 5, 2011, we're getting married September 22, 2012..  We were wondering, when should we register!!??  when did most of you guys, how soon??

Re: when should we register???

  • The earliest of:
*when your engagement party invitations go out (If gifts at engagement parties are typical in your circle, as they are in mine, but not most)
*when your bridal shower invitations go out
    *6 months before

Do your best to wait until all the after-Christmas sales are over, though. If you register in January, you'll have to basically repeat the process when the sales are over the the 2012 stock, with new models replacing what's been discountinued, comes in.
  • I'm getting married in August 2012, and we registered this past October, mainly because we were having an engagement party and guests at the e-party started asking where we were registered.  Yes, it was early, so we do need to keep an eye on the registry and replace/update items when they get discontinued as the seasons change, but I just browse through it online once a month or so, and it seems to be working fine so far.

  • yeah it can be whenever you want as long as you keep an eye on it.  We are going to do Macy's, Kohl's, and probably pottery barn.  We may also do some short lists at WS or CB for things that we want to buy with the discounts afterwards but just not list them on our web sites.  If guests find them on their own it's because they searched, not because they would have found it through our web site.  Amazon is another popular one and so is BBB.  Avoid Target like the plague - they have a horrible reputation on here.  You might want to spend a little time researching the completion discounts and deals at each of your favorite stores.   Macy's gives you 5% back on anything spent on your registry and 10% back on anything you spend for yourself if you have a Macy's card.  Kohl's just this week started a deal to give you 10% back on everything spent on your registry - they will give you up to $200 as a voucher, which is pretty sweet.  And if you have a Kohl's card you can use it with those 30% off coupons they send out every month or so.  Dillard's does 20% off as a competion discount when most places do 10%.  WS, PB, and CB all let you add things to your registry AFTER your wedding to get their discounts, which can be nice if you are eyeing some furniture but don't want to look gift grabby by listing several things that are many hundreds (or thousands) of dollars.  They are all different.
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • We're getting married Sept. 8 and are going to register the first week of February.

  • We're date twins! FI and I are registering sometime in March. We don't anticipate any showers really early or anything, so we figured 6 months out would be good.
  • We didn't register until 3 months before the wedding...didn't see the point in registering so early when the only pre wedding parties we were having were showers which were about 6-8 weeks prior to wedding.  I don't recommend going 3 months before because registry takes a little longer than you think and it really got in my way of planning and my schedule.

However do not register too early.  Even with registering 3 months before things were already out of stock or "out of season" (which was weird since we did not register for anything on sale, seasonal, or clearance).  The sooner you register the more likely you are to having out of stock items and registry stalking.
