Coed shower ideas

My mom, MOH, aunts, etc. are throwing us a shower at my mom's house.  Men are invited, as I see it very silly to not invite my guy friends to a party where we will be having fun.  Some are the significant others of friends/family, some are just friends so it is NOT only couples.

Our plan is to simply have an easy buffet lunch (think sandwiches, salads, etc.), beer/wine/liquor and let people mill about in the house and yards.  We were going to set up Bags and Ladder Ball games.  We really aren't into the whole shower game thing, especially since most are dopey and meant for just women/just couples.  My mom however suggested a fortune teller or tarot reader, does that sound fun?  Or stupid?  It's not like they're going to give any 'bad' news at a shower!

Has anyone seen this at a shower before, or have similar ideas?

  • I think it's stupid. I hope that doesn't sound too rude. I may be biased though. I don't agree with tarrot cards, fortune tellers and stuff of that nature. All I keep thinking of is the king in the Bible who was killed for visiting a medium, lol. You may have guests who don't feel comfortable with that type of stuff too.

I was on board with this until I got to the bolded part. I know people who have done a co-ed shower, kept it casual with good food, some alcohol, bags like you mentioned, etc. That sounds fun. I would not want to go to a party with a fortune teller though. Maybe because I think that stuff is stupid, but beyond that, I just don't think that really has place at a shower, KWIM? I think of that stuff as being at a carnival or a fair. I think it would be a waste of money because youd have to hire this person, and I Just don't think it's worth it or that people would really wanna do it.

  • Thank you for the input!  I know it sounded corny but sometimes corny is good...but I didn't know if my friends would really do it and that kind of seals the answer.

The Biblical thing is not what bothered me, I am a non-practicing Jew and he is a non-practicing Catholic (so I guess that just means we aren't anything!).

  • Summer2011Bride, you said you've seen shower similar with how I described my plan (minus the teller) - anything you can suggest for other yard games or something?  Any hints on what you felt those were missing?  This is a pretty casual party we're looking for.

I'm not sure how those choices are... better, and I'm definitely not trying to be sexist. I'm just saying that in my circle, none of the guys would go for either of those options and I have a lot of "dopey" guy friends.
Think of it this way, I was at a similar party, too and we played horseshoes and I think someone brought a croquet set, but we never got around to playing it lol. For the most part, men and women do often enjoy the same party games. So you don't need to think too hard about what games to offer.
