Traditions

Does your family or FI family have any wedding traditions that you are having in your wedding?

Why did you choose to continue this tradition?

Are you starting anything new that others in your family want to make traditions?

My family didn't have any and FI's only has 1. Because they are catholic the godmother is supposed to cut the cake to serve at the reception after the bride and groom. He has a godmother (we don't like long story) so we will be using close aunts instead.

We wanted to continue that because it means a lot to FMIL also the aunt he choose to cut his cake is the same one who cut his brothers so it meant a lot to her. (and we needed someone to do this)

I am attaching a brooch my greatgrandmother had to my bouquet. It will be my borrowed and old. My cousin LOVED this idea and has decided to steal it. It will become a new tradition for us.

Re: Traditions

  • FI's family doesn't have any (or at least that they have shared), and my family didn't really have any, but my sister wore my grandmothers handkerchief in her garter on her wedding day and I will do the same :) so I guess that is our new family tradition, I will also be wearing the same grandmother's pearl necklaces as well.

I am wearing his grandmas (his dads mom, deceased) pearl necklace from her wedding, a three strand tiered very pretty little vintage thing. I am also wearing his mothers pearl and diamond bracelet from her wedding. His other grandma( moms mom) wanted me to wear her saphire earrings from her wedding, but i have guaged ears (did when i was younger anyway) and cant wear standard earrings.

Aside from that, just doing the signing the sole of my shoes, last legible one will marry next rather than a bouquet toss...etc.

  • we don't have any traditions, but I will be using the cake knife that my parents used at their wedding and I hope that my daughter will continue this "tradition" when she gets married (along long time from now ).

  • What I have found out about my FI's family is they have a TON of traditions!  My FI comes from a traditional Catholic Mexican family.  The three major traditions we will be doing during the ceremony are the arras (click!), the lasso (scroll futher down the page), and the passing of a Bible.  I found this surprising, but his family does not have the tradition of a unity candle, so that's the tradition we will be carrying on from my family!  It's such a fun way to learn more about each other's cultures!

  • Our families dont really have any traditions, however my mom's family is all very feminist (which might explain the lack of traditions..they might have all ended at my grandmothers generation), and my grandmother was known for being one of the first people in thier community to have the guts to leave out the line "to obey" in the traditional wedding vows, everyone else since who has used traditional vows has also left that line out and I will be leaving it out as well. My aunt didnt wear a white dress, my other aunt had a potluck, my cousins didnt even have a wedding, they had a 'celebration of lifelong commitment" (holds up as a commenlaw situation in legal avenues) So its a tradition to go against tradition I suppose.
